Red Sox recall RHP Cuevas, send down RHP Haley

Right-handed pitcher William Cuevas is back on the Boston Red Sox's active roster, called up by the club from Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday.

To make room on the active roster, the Red Sox optioned right-hander Justin Haley to Pawtucket. The team also transferred right-hander Carson Smith to the 60-day disabled list to create a spot for Cuevas on the 40-man roster.

Cuevas, 27, made his major league debut with the Red Sox in 2016, going 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA in three games. He appeared in one game with the Tigers last season, giving up four runs in one-third of an inning. He is 5-5 with a 3.65 ERA in 15 games -- all starts -- with Pawtucket this season. He has 67 strikeouts and has given up 77 hits in 86 1/3 innings. He has never started a game in the majors.

The Red Sox open a three-game series in Washington on Monday night, and Cuevas is expected to be with the club for the opener.

In two tours with the Red Sox this season, Haley, 27, has made four appearances, giving up four runs on 10 hits in 7 2/3 innings. On Sunday night, he gave up one run on four hits and two walks in 2 2/3 innings of relief. He made his big-league debut with Minnesota last season, giving up 12 runs (all earned) on 22 hits in 18 innings. He also struck out 14 and picked up a save with the Twins.

Smith, 28, was placed on the 10-day disabled list on May 15 with a right shoulder subluxation. He underwent successful surgery on the shoulder June 13. Smith is 1-1 with a 3.77 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 18 appearances for the Red Sox this season. He has appeared in 108 major league games between Seattle and the Red Sox, sporting a career 4-5 record with a 2.21 ERA, 129 strikeouts and only four home runs allowed. He also has 14 career saves.
