Red Sox activate Ortiz, designate Tazawa

Designated hitter David Ortiz was activated from the disabled list by the Red Sox on Friday, and had a two-run single in his first at-bat in the cleanup spot against Kansas City.

It was Ortiz's first game since straining his right Achilles on July 16. The 36-year-old, who missed 35 games, doubled in his second at-bat Friday.

Right-handed pitcher Junichi Tazawa was optioned to Class AAA Pawtucket. Tazawa, 26, has a 1.37 ERA and one save in 20 appearances for the Red Sox this season, and a 2.55 ERA with 56 strikeouts in 42.1 innings pitched for Pawtucket.
