BOSTON -- Shane Victorino's infield single scored Jacoby Ellsbury for Boston's first walk-off victory of the season, as the Red Sox beat the Rays, 2-1, in 10 innings on Saturday at Fenway Park.
With one out in the 10th, Ellsbury singled to center off Brandon Gomes. With Victorino batting, Ellsbury stole second and a throwing error by catcher Jose Lobaton allowed him to reach third.
With Tampa Bay using a five-man infield, Victorino beat out a grounder, with Ellsbury scoring the game-winning run.
Aces David Price and Jon Lester matched each other nearly pitch-for-pitch, but neither left-hander recorded a decision.
Price rebounded from a difficult outing in his last start to hold the Red Sox to one run over six innings, with four hits, two walks, and eight strikeouts.
Lester went seven innings, giving up one run on five hits, a walk, a wild pitch, and five strikeouts.
The Rays opened the scoring when Desmond Jennings singled to lead off the third and scored on Sean Rodriguez's double that caromed around the left field corner.
Boston tied the score in the fourth on David Ross' first home run of the season.
Joel Hanrahan, whom Boston acquired in an off-season trade with the Pirates to be their closer, walked the first two batters in the ninth, including lead-off batter Evan Longoria on four pitches.
That was enough for Red Sox manager John Farrell, who replaced Hanrahan with Koji Uehara, who got Boston out of the jam unscathed.
NOTES: With his strikeout of Evan Longoria in the third inning, Jon Lester recorded the 1,076th of his career, moving past Luis Tiant into sixth place on the Red Sox all-time list. ... Left-handed hitting Matt Joyce batted ninth against Lester, the first time this season he's been in that spot. Manager Joe Maddon said he thought moving Joyce, who entered the game hitting .174, low in the order against a left-handed pitcher might jump- start him. ... Longoria, who went hitless in his last two games, was moved to third in the order. ... Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz, who began the season on the disabled list because of Achilles and heel ailments, went 1-for-4, with a run scored, two RBI, and a strikeout Saturday in his second rehab game with Triple-A Pawtucket. ... The Rays entered the game with the best opponents' record at Fenway Park since the start of 2010, at 18-9. ... David Price entered the game with a 3.08 ERA against the Red Sox, the best mark of any active starter (minimum 15 starts). His 2.22 ERA and .203 opponents' average at Fenway were also the best among active starters. ... David Ross' fifth-inning home run off Price came with two out. It was the 28th run Rays' pitchers have allowed with two out this season, accounting for 62 percent of the 45 runs they have given up.
