Randy Gregory will not play for 49ers on Sunday vs. Cowboys

The 49ers wont’ have new edge rusher Randy Gregory on Sunday night when they take the field vs. the Dallas Cowboys.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Friday after the trade said Gregory was in the Bay Area for a physical, but would be heading back to Denver before rejoining the team Monday.

“Just met him,” Shanahan told reporters in his post-practice press conference. “He came in today, took his physical and stuff, so just got a chance to meet him. So I was a little bit late here. But he’s going to head back today, see his family, get his stuff and he’ll be out here Monday.”

The 49ers head coach later joked that he didn’t want to give the team’s secrets away and said “there’s a chance” Gregory plays after ruling him out for Sunday’s game.

It makes sense that San Francisco wouldn’t immediately try plugging Gregory into the DE rotation. He not only wasn’t acquired until Friday, but he didn’t even get a chance to suit up. Putting him on the field even for a handful of snaps could’ve led to a disaster in a game where even a minor mistake could decide the outcome.

The 49ers and Cowboys kick off at 5:20pm Pacific from Levi’s Stadium on Sunday. Gregory will be back with the team Monday to help them begin preparations for their Week 6 game at Cleveland.
