Rams would’ve taken Ernest Jones at No. 88, thrilled to get him after trading back

When the Los Angeles Rams went on the clock at No. 88, they considered drafting linebacker Ernest Jones. But believing he would fall a little bit further, they took a chance and traded out of the pick, striking a deal with the 49ers for No. 117 overall.

Their bet paid off as they were still able to land Jones with pick 103.

Les Snead discussed the deal with the 49ers and said the Rams would’ve taken Jones with the 88th pick, but they’re happy to have added another fourth-rounder by trading back.

“It is interesting. It’s not game day, so I guess it’s kosher to trade within the division,” he joked. “I think at that point in time, we did feel like moving back then, we felt like some of our favorite players would fall to 103 and it did work out because we would’ve picked Ernest at 88 and we were able to land him at 103. So being able to add another fourth-rounder and have three tomorrow, we felt like was a positive thing for the Rams.”

In addition to pick 117, the Rams also landed the 121st overall pick from the 49ers, giving them three fourth-rounders. It’s always good when you can get a player you really like while also scooping up an extra pick in the process.
