QB coach Matt Weiss signed 2-year deal with Michigan football worth $1.2 million

Michigan football agreed to a two-year deal with Matt Weiss, according to records obtained by the Free Press.

Weiss, previously an assistant coach with the Baltimore Ravens, signed a memorandum of understanding with Michigan on Feb. 22, according to records obtained via a Freedom of Information Act request.

The agreement lists Weiss as an assistant football coach. He will make $600,000 in base salary over both years of his contract.

Weiss, who was announced as the Wolverines' quarterbacks coach, was a member of the Ravens' coaching staff for the past 12 seasons, where he worked for Jim Harbaugh's brother, John. Weiss previously worked with Harbaugh at Stanford, serving as a defensive and special teams graduate assistant between 2005-08.

Weiss coached Baltimore's running backs the past two seasons, the receivers in 2018 and the quarterbacks between 2016-17. He was the Ravens' football strategy coordinator in 2018.

Weiss was hired after former linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary left for Tennessee. Michigan had already completed the staff before Jean-Mary's departure; in lieu of hiring a linebackers coach to replace Jean-Mary, Harbaugh chose to hire Weiss, move George Helow from safeties to linebackers and and move Ron Bellamy from receivers to safeties.

Weiss' contract means Michigan's assistant coaching salary pool for the 2021 season has increased to $5.55 million. It was previously $5.4 million. Weiss is the fourth-highest paid assistant coach, after defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald ($1 million), offensive coordinator Josh Gattis ($900,000) and co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Maurice Linguist ($680,000).
