Pueblo's top high school games to watch this week: Soccer, football, golf and more

The fall sports season is underway and with it comes a full slate of home games in Pueblo for this upcoming week.

Each week, the Chieftain selects the best home games to watch for the week.

This week's games to watch feature a big matchup on the pitch between two of the top teams in Pueblo, some heavy hitters at the plate for softball, some early season matchups on the tennis court, and of course, the return of the rivalry games as the Pigskin Classic highlighting our football game of the week. Plus, we have golf, volleyball, and more in the full week of sports across Pueblo.

Here are our selections for the week:

Boys Golf

  • Pueblo County vs. Pueblo Central vs. Pueblo West vs. Pueblo East vs. Pueblo South, 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 28 at Elmwood Golf Course

  • Pueblo County vs. Rye at Holydot Golf Course, 10 a.m. on Sept. 1

Another big tournament for Pueblo as the South Colts hosts their Invitational at Elmwood Golf Course this coming week and all of Pueblo is scheduled to participate in this event. Pueblo County will also play in the Rye Invitational later in the week at Holydot Golf Course on Friday.

Boys Tennis

  • Pueblo Central vs. Pueblo Centennial at Pueblo Centennial, at 4 p.m. on Aug. 28

  • Canon City vs. Pueblo East at City Park, at 4 p.m. on Aug. 29

  • Pueblo West vs. Pueblo South at Pueblo South High School, at 4 p.m. on Aug. 30

  • Canon City vs. Pueblo Central at Pueblo Central, at 4 p.m. on Aug. 31

Some early season Pueblo vs. Pueblo matchups on the tennis courts will take place this week as Central battles Centennial on Monday and West takes on South on Wednesday. Other action during the week includes Canon City visiting Pueblo East on Tuesday and then Canon City will face Central on Thursday.

Softball

  • La Junta vs. Pueblo South at Pueblo South High School, at 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 29

  • Widefield vs. Pueblo Centennial at Runyon Field, at 5 p.m. on Aug. 29

  • Mesa Ridge vs. Pueblo South at Pueblo South High School, at 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 31

  • Falcon vs. Pueblo Centennial at Runyon Field, 5 p.m. on Aug. 31

  • Sand Creek vs. Dolores Huerta Prep at Dolores Huerta Prep High School, at 10 a.m. on Sept. 2

  • Lutheran High School vs. Pueblo South at Pueblo South High School, at 10 a.m. on Sept. 2

  • Elizabeth vs. Pueblo West at Pueblo West High School, at 10 a.m. on Sept. 2

Lots of action this week from the softball diamond, South and Centennial will be hosting several home games this week. South kicks things off on Tuesday hosting La Junta, Centennial will host Widefield later that night. On Thursday South hosts Mesa Ridge and Centennial will host Falcon. On Saturday Sand Creek will pay a visit to Dolores Huerta and then to wrap things up Lutheran will face off against South and West will host Elizabeth.

Boys Soccer

  • Pueblo West vs. Pueblo Centennial at Dutch Clark Stadium, at 5 p.m. on Aug. 29

  • Pueblo Central vs. Pueblo County at Pueblo County, at 7 p.m. on Aug. 29

  • Pueblo South vs. Pueblo East at Dutch Clark Stadium, at 7 p.m. on Aug. 29

  • Canon City vs. Pueblo Centennial at Dutch Clark Stadium, at 4 p.m. on Aug. 31

  • Lamar vs. Pueblo County at Hornet Stadium, at 5 p.m. on Aug. 31

  • Durango vs. Pueblo West at CSU Pueblo – Art and Lorraine Gonzales Stadium at 1 p.m. on Sept. 1

  • Lake County vs. Dolores Huerta Prep at Dolores Huerta Prep High School, at 4:30 p.m. on Sept 1

  • Woodland Park vs. Pueblo East at Dutch Clark Stadium, at 10 a.m. on Sept. 2

An early season test on the pitch will take place on Tuesday afternoon as Pueblo West and Pueblo Centennial will face off for the first time this season. The two teams finished in the top two in the South-Central League last season and the expectations are that they will finish atop the standings again this year. However, Central, South, East and County all have their eyes on the top spot as well. Central and County face off late in the evening on Tuesday and South and East face off at the same time. Later in the week Canon City visits Centennial and Lamar visits County. Pueblo West will have a makeup game against Durango on Friday at CSUP’s stadium.

Girls Volleyball

  • Manitou Springs vs. Pueblo East at Pueblo East High School, at 6 p.m. on Aug. 29

  • Mesa Ridge vs. Pueblo County at Hornet Gym Tuesday, at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 29

  • Falcon vs. Pueblo South at Pueblo South High School, at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 29

  • Rye vs. Swallows Charter Academy at Swallows Charter Academy, at 7 p.m. on Aug. 29

  • Doherty vs. Pueblo West at Pueblo West High School, at 6 p.m. on Aug. 31

Some fun games to watch this week on the volleyball courts as East hosts Manitou Springs on Tuesday and County will host Mesa Ridge on the same night. Falcon also visits South on Tuesday and Rye will take on Swallows Charter as the late game Tuesday night. The final game of the week for volleyball will see West hosting Doherty on Thursday.

  • Palmer vs. Pueblo Centennial at Dutch Clark Stadium, at 7 p.m. on Sept. 2

There will be lots of action this week on the gridiron as Pueblo East takes on Pueblo Central on Thursday night. County and West kick off the first of the three major rivalry games in town with the Pigskin Classic on Friday. The game will take place at the Thunderbowl at CSU-Pueblo. Pueblo South will look to bounce back against Discovery Canyon on Friday at Dutch Clark Stadium. On Saturday, Dolores Huerta will have their first home game of the season taking on Elbert in 8-man football, and Centennial will look to get into the win column with a matchup against Palmer on Saturday night at Dutch Clark.
