PROVIDENCE JOURNAL GAME OF THE NIGHT

Matt Raffa, Barrington boys basketball
Matt Raffa, Barrington boys basketball

Matt Raffa scored nine of his career high 39 points in overtime, helping keep the Barrington boys basketball team undefeated with a 70-64 overtime win over La Salle.

The battle between two of the state’s best teams didn’t disappoint.

Timoy Stichell got the Rams off to a hot start with nine points in the first quarter that helped them take a 32-24 lead at halftime. Raffa got things turned around for the Eagles after the break, hitting three quick 3-pointers and closing with a fourth as he scored 15 of the team’s 24 points that put them up 50-48 heading to the fourth.

The final quarter was a slugfest with neither team giving an inch and both coming up with late stops that kept things knotted at 61.

In overtime, Raffa was possessed. He started the scoring with a 3-pointer, made two more buckets and closed out the win with two free throws, accounting for all nine of Barrington’s points.

Raffa led all scorers with 39 and Nick Scandura was equally impressive with his 23-point performance. Evan Anderson added six in the win and Owen Pfeffer rounded out the scoring with a third-quarter bucket.

Stitchell led La Salle with 23 points in the loss. Nick Tarro joined him in double figures with 14 and Rex Zadrozny chipped in with 12.

DIVISION I

East Greenwich 47, Smithfield 42

Rees Maccarone and Dante DesMarais got it done on offense in the fourth quarter and the Avengers’ defense stepped up in a big way in a 47-42 win over the Sentinels.

After a big second quarter from Maccarone, East Greenwich led 29-20 at halftime. Smithfield stepped up its defensive pressure and tied the game at 35 at halftime, thanks in part to some big 3-point shots from Michaels Sands and C.J. Blakely.

But the Avengers snagged momentum quick in the fourth. Maccarone and DesMarais scored nine of the team’s 12 points while holding the Sentinels to seven.

Maccarone led EG with 15 points and DesMarais was in double figures with 10. Javied David added eight in the win.

Blakely was the top scorer for Smithfield with nine points.

Mount Pleasant 49, Narragansett 41

Defense did the job for the Kilties in the second half in a 49-41 win over the Mariners in a game that finished in an empty gym thanks to an incident at halftime involving spectators.

Narragansett’s offense came out cooking in the first quarter, with Jackson Hohl scoring 10 points that had the Mariners up 19-13. Mount Pleasant revved up its defensive effort and held Gansett to seven in the second quarter, taking a 31-26 lead at the break thanks to 15 first-half points from Jami Amado.

While the teams were in the locker room, an incident took place and the gym was cleared out for players safety. After a 10-15 minute delay, the teams resumed play.

The Kilties’ defense continued to control the game. Mount Pleasant held Narragansett to five points in the third quarter to build a five-point lead and Jaylin Robertson’s fourth-quarter free-throw shooting (6-for-6) helped the Kilties hold on to the win.

Amado led Mount Pleasant with 21 points. Sam Varneau scored seven in the win and Roberton, Domingo Qualls and Benji Mordan added six apiece.

Hohl was Narragansett’s top scorer, dropping 16.

Reyes finished with a game-high 24 points. James Caldarella joined him in double figures with 16 and Will Mascena scored eight in the win.

East Providence 82, Central 65

The Townies’ balanced scoring attack proved too much for the Knights to handle in EP’s 82-65 win.

Levi Jacobs and Kenaz Ochgwu were responsible for most of the damage, combining for 33 points. Franklin Carela-Lopez had a good night with 14 points and Derrell Liggins made it four Townies in double figures with 10 points.

Lestor Rodriguez had a big night for Central, scoring 23 points. Elijah Reed and Jonathan Ramos both scored 11 and Jermaine Colon added 10 in the loss.

Tolman 80, Tiverton 38

The Tigers pounced early and often and kept their foot on the gas until the final buzzer sounded on their 80-38 win.

Elliot Pasquale led Tiverton with 15 points.

Voelker posted 14 points in the first quarter alone, giving Coventry a 25-12 lead at halftime it never looked back from. He finished the night with 27 points.

Broady was just as good, scoring 12 points in the first half before finishing with 21. Logan Moore and Caleb Whited added six points apiece in the win.

Johnston posted 10 points in the first eight minutes, helping St. Raphael jump out to a 19-2 lead. He scored 16 in the first half and finished the night with 23 points and 12 rebounds.

Jayden Matos also came up big for the Saints, scoring 16 points, and Khamari Brown nearly had a double-double himself with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Davante Abney was the leading scorer for Hope, posting 21 in the loss.

Middletown 70, Toll Gate 49

Roberto Figueras had a night to remember, recording a quadruple-double as the Islanders blew out the Titans, 70-49.

Figueras finished his night with 17 points, 12 assists 11 steals and 10 rebounds. R.J. Wiggins led Middletown in scoring with 25 and Patrick Cranson scored 14.

Jack Colvin reached double digits for Toll Gate with 13 and Dylan Perreault scored 11.

The Raiders exploded in the third quarter and took their game to a place the Broncos couldn’t keep up with in a 69-55 win.

Burrillville started strong, leading 22-10 after the first quarter. Shea picked its game up in the second, allowing only two points to take a 25-24 lead at the half. In the third, it was all Raiders as four players combined to score 20 points, giving them a 45-39 lead heading to the fourth before they put the game away.

Jayden Sanchez was the big scorer for Shea, dropping 20 in the win. Manny Ibidapo was right behind him with 18 points and Keon Silva scored 11.

Nolan Serafin was the game’s high scorer, putting up 24 in the loss for Burrillville. Jordan Furtado had the hot hand early with 10 points in the first quarter before finishing with 15.

Times2 50, Rogers 49

Samuel Feliz and Steven Garcia came up clutch in overtime, helping the Eagles take down the Vikings 50-49.

The game was close all night long, with Times2 leading 24-22 at halftime and 38-31 after the third until Rogers saw six players score in a fourth-quarter comeback that forced the extra session.

In OT, Felix and Garcia combined for six points, which was enough to withstand the damage done by Alex Toribo’s five to give the Eagles the win.

Garcia led the way for Times2 with 18 points and Feliz finished with 14. John Williams chipped in with seven.

Travis Burroughs was the top scorer for the Vikings, putting up 16.

Juanita Sanchez came out hot, leading 17-10 after the first quarter, 33-25 at the half and 45-38 heading to the fourth quarter. That’s where Moses Brown came alive, getting 18 combined points from Collin Mburu and Ian Cooper to take a 57-56 lead late.

Folger, who had made his first three free throws of the quarter, was fouled, stepped to the line and came through with a pair with 20 seconds left. Juanita’s defense did the rest and sealed the win.

Kyle Delves led the Cavaliers with 15 points and Chris Hernandez scored 12. Folger and Taurean Williams both came up with 11.

The first quarter was close, ending with Mount up 11-9, but defense flipped the game in the second quarter. The Mounties held HC to just three points, taking a 21-12 lead and taking control the rest of the night.
