Pretty Mischievous, trained by Brendan Walsh, wins Kentucky Oaks 2023 at Churchill Downs
Pretty Mischievous made a four-wide move at the quarter pole to take the lead and held off hard-charging Gambling Girl to win Friday’s $1.25 million, Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs.
A crowd of 106,381 on a warm and sunny afternoon saw Pretty Mischievous and jockey Tyler Gaffalione — breaking from the outside No. 14 post position — cover the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.77 and pay $22.74 to win.
“I was hoping she wouldn’t go too soon, but I guess she was traveling so easy,” trainer Brendan Walsh said. “It went exactly how we planned it.”
A daughter of Into Mischief out of the Tapit mare Pretty City Dancer, Pretty Mischievous won for the third time in four starts at Churchill Downs. She entered off a runner-up finish behind Southlawn in the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks on March 25.
Owned by Godolphin, Pretty Mischievous improved to 5-1-1 in seven career starts.
