Prep Wrestling: Gibraltar Carlson, Dundee move on to Regionals
WYANDOTTE – Gibraltar Carlson produced a thriller in the first Division 1 District wrestling match in school history.
The Marauders, who moved up from Division 2 this season, nipped host Wyandotte Roosevelt 37-36 in the semifinals, then went on to win the District by beating Woodhaven 45-25 in the finals Wednesday.
Carlson trailed 36-32 heading into the final match of the semifinals. Gabrial Lyle delivered a technical fall at 190 pounds to give his team the win.
That’s exactly who Carlson coach Lance Hassell wanted on the mat.
“I couldn’t ask for anyone better,” Hassell said. “He’s our only senior. He was a great guy to finish the match with.”
The Marauders needed at least a technical fall, They would have lost by criteria is Lyle had finished with a major decision.

“He faced a decent kid,” Hassell said. “We knew it would be hard to pin him. We were thinking tech. He played the takedown game. Gabe moves really well on his feet.”
A near-fall late the third period gave Lyle the technical fall that sent the Marauders into the District finals.
Dino Gessner (106), Wally Sindone (113), Denim Gessner (138), Gunnar Adams (175) and Michael Shaw (215) all came through with pins in the finals.
Carlson will take on Bedford at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the semifinals of a Regional that will be at Carlson.
Buhl gives Dundee a lift
DUNDEE – Dundee did not give up a point in rolling to the championship of the Division 3 District it hosted Wednesday.
The Vikings beat Ida 82-0 in the semifinals and Milan 79-0 in the finals.
Football star Cooper Buhl recorded a pair of pins at 190 pounds.
“It was nice to see him in the lineup,” said Garrett Stevens, who co-coaches Dundee with Nate Hall.
Cameron Chinavare (138), Rocco Redmon (157) and Kole Katschor (175) also had a pair of falls and Donny Beaufait (165) logged a major decision and a pin.
Other pins came from Aiden Massingill (285), Braden Broderick (126), Avery Lane (132), Jeremy Amrhein (144), Wyatt Burns (132), Blake Cosby (150) and Landon King (215).
Not many Vikings got to wrestle twice.
“Neither team had a full lineup,” Stevens said. “There were quite a few voids.”
Dundee, ranked No. 1 in the state, did what is had to do to improve to 13-5 and advance to Wednesday’s Regional at Grosse Ile. The Vikings will face Grosse Ile in the semifinals. Hazel Park and Lutheran Westland are the other teams in the Regional.
“We tried to get the whole team focused on the same goal,” Stevens said. “We want to get sharper in certain positions and get bonus points.”
Milan reached the finals with a 54-24 conquest of Erie Mason.
Flat Rock bows out
GROSSE ILE – Flat Rock’s dual-meet season came to an end Wednesday with a 44-27 loss to Grosse Ile in the finals of the Division 3 District that Grosse Ile hosted.
Colin Booms (132), Wyatt Mack (157) and John Lukasik (190) recorded pins and Noah Simpson (138) won a decision for the Rams.
