Prep Wrestling: 44 locals are set to battle in Palm Springs at the CIF-SS Masters Meet

There will be plenty of High Desert representation at this weekend’s CIF-Southern Section Masters wrestling meet in Palm Springs.

Forty-four wrestlers — 25 boys and 19 girls — qualified for the Masters from area high schools at the CIF-SS Divisional meets last weekend.

The CIF-SS Masters tournament will be held at Palm Springs High School on Feb. 16 and 17. The boys tournament is Friday, while the girls will be in action Saturday.

Each weight class is split into blue and gold brackets.

The top 10 boys (five in each bracket) and the top eight girls (four in each bracket) will qualify for the CIF State Wrestling Championships, in Bakersfield.

Here's a list of all 44 area wrestlers who will be in action this weekend on the mats at Palm Springs High School.

Boys Qualifiers

106 pounds

Daniel Mendoza, Victor Valley, sophomore — Mendoza will begin the tournament with a first-round match against Great Oak's Davis Shaposhnick in the blue bracket.

Zachary Southern, Hesperia, senior — Southern will begin the tournament with a first-round match against Aliso Niguel's Garen Keshishian in the blue bracket. Southern and Mendoza will square off if they are both victorious.

113 pounds

Cael Humphrey, Sultana, freshman — Humphrey will begin the tournament with a first-round match against Norco's Andrew Acevedo in the blue bracket.

Rocky Humphrey Jr., Sultana, junior — Humphrey will begin the tournament with a first-round match against Calabasas' Micah Wegman in the blue bracket.

Tyler Mulford, Apple Valley, senior — Mulford will begin the tournament with a first-round match against Valencia's Slater Hicks in the gold bracket.

Andrew Diaz, Hesperia, senior — Diaz will begin the tournament with a first-round match against Servite's Alex Newman in the gold bracket.

Denzel Cisneros, Sultana, junior — Cisneros will begin the tournament with a first-round match against Aliso Niguel's Khaisen Chen in the gold bracket.

Josue Guillen, Victor Valley, junior — Guillen will begin the tournament with a first-round match against Martin Luther King's Mateo Ochoa in the blue bracket.

132 pounds

Emiliano Hernandez, Hesperia, sophomore — Hernandez will begin the tournament with a first-round match against Murrieta Valley's Ty Greer in the blue bracket.

Abdon Rodriguez, Barstow, junior — Rodriguez will begin the tournament with a first-round match against Northview's Henry Arellano in the gold bracket.

Isaac Tellez, Victor Valley, senior — Tellez will begin the tournament with a first-round match against Servite's Calen Reyna in the blue bracket.
