PREP SOCCER: Cullman boys blank Athens 1-0; St. Bernard's Kerber scores 4 goals in win

Mar. 7—ATHENS — Wyatt Harris was stellar in goal, Jayce Johnston found the back of the net and Cullman's varsity boys soccer team picked up a 1-0 win over Athens on Thursday night.

Harris made five saves — including a critical one with less than five minutes to play — to record a clean sheet.

Athens maintained possession for most of the contest, especially in the first half when the teams fought to a scoreless draw at the break.

But in the second half, the Bearcats finally broke through. In the 55th minute, Gianpaolo Cipollari placed a picture-perfect pass ahead of Johnston near the Golden Eagles' box. After a couple of touches, Johnston blasted a shot that deflected off the Athens keeper and trickled across the line.

The Bearcat defense then stepped up in the final 25 minutes and managed to keep the Athens offense at bay to secure the victory.

Cullman, which improved to 8-4-2 on the season, now begins preparations for its area opener at home against Hartselle next Thursday.
