PREP ROUNDUP: Wrestlers compete at regionals
Feb. 5—Logansport hosted a wrestling regional on Saturday at the Berry Bowl.
The host Berries had two wrestlers advance. Top four finishers in each weight class advanced to Saturday's East Chicago Central Semistate.
Logansport senior Sergio Lorenzo advanced with a third-place finish in the 285-pound weight class. Senior Levi Sutton advanced with a fourth-place finish at 165.
Lorenzo (20-4) opened his day by defeating Delphi's Ethan McIlrath (15-19) by 11-4 decision. Lorenzo was then defeated by eventual regional champion Alex Luna (21-4) of McCutcheon by fall in a semifinal match. Lorenzo pinned Seeger's Kayne Acton (16-16) in the third-place match.
Sutton (18-9) defeated McCutcheon's Matthew Hughes (22-12) by 14-2 major decision in the first round. Sutton was then defeated by North White's Eli Quasebarth (32-4) by 5-0 decision in a semifinal match. Sutton was defeated by Tri-County's Kevin Martinez-Morale (31-5) by fall in the third-place match.
Lewis Cass junior Eli Bowyer placed runner-up in the 132-pound weight class at the Peru Regional. Bowyer (26-7) defeated Tri-Central's Jaiton Archer (33-4) by fall in the first round. Bowyer defeated Peru's Glen Baldwin (22-13) by 14-8 decision in a semifinal. Bowyer was defeated by Western's Tye Linser (29-2) by fall in the championship match. Bowyer will compete at the Fort Wayne South Side Regional at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum on Saturday.
Winamac senior Willis Dennis advanced with a third-place finish at 138 at the Penn Regional. Dennis (24-14) defeated South Bend Riley's Brock Beshires (16-22) by fall in the first round. Dennis was defeated by Penn's Jake Petras (24-15) by fall in a semifinal. Dennis defeated LaVille's Jonah Skiles (22-15) by fall in the third-place match. Dennis will compete at the East Chicago Central Semistate on Saturday.
GIRLS SWIMMING
WARSAW SECTIONAL
Cass placed fifth, Pioneer placed seventh and Logansport placed ninth out of 12 teams at the event Saturday. Culver Academies won.
Cass junior Maryn Zeck had the top finish among area swimmers, placing third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:05.94. She also placed sixth in the 200 IM (2:28.96)
Cass sophomore Hannah Penn placed fourth in diving (267.85) to advance to Tuesday's Valparaiso Regional.
Freshman Mia Hall placed sixth in both the 100 freestyle (:58.98) and sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.12) for the Lady Kings. Senior Maci Garland placed sixth in the 50 free (:26.56) and eighth in the 100 butterfly (1:08.5).
Cass' 200 medley relay team of Zeck, Hall, Garland and Sydney Holmquist placed fifth with a season-best time of 2:00.1. The 200 free relay consisting of the same swimmers placed fifth in 1:51.12. The 400 free relay team of Mayce Armstrong, Adalyn Brown, Trinity Hagen and Kennedy McLaughlin placed seventh in 4:33.88.
Pioneer senior Chloe Chan placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.69) and seventh in the 50 free (:26.68).
The Panthers' 200 medley relay team of Cailyn Colford, Chan, Addie Cripe and Kylie Attinger placed seventh with a school-record time of 2:03.99. The 200 free relay team of Kaia Murray, Kamryn Newby, Liz Rance and Attinger placed sixth (1:55.02). The 400 free relay team of Rance, Ayla Depoy, Murray and Attinger also placed sixth (4:29.6).
Pioneer junior Gracie Clem placed 11th in diving (239.0).
Logansport junior Ashley Murillo placed seventh in diving (259.1) to lead the Berries. Senior Elizabeth Evans placed eighth (257.8).
The Berries had two relay teams place ninth. The 200 medley relay team of Isabella Nicoles, Adyson Porter, Marilyn Macias and Kennedy Klinkhamer swam a 2:21.46. The 400 free relay team of Natalie Graham, Porter, Ximena Lopez and Nicoles swam a 4:38.9.
BOYS BASKETBALL
CASS 46, ROCHESTER 44
The Kings edged the visiting Zebras in Three Rivers Conference play.
LJ Hillis led the Kings with 14 points. Bryce Rudd and Brennan Deeter had nine apiece, Brody Hillis added six and Trey Johnson and Kolten Young each added four.
The Kings (6-11, 2-6 TRC) snapped a three-game skid with a win over the Zebras (8-7, 4-2).
Tanner Reinartz led the Zebras with 13 points. Drew Bowers added eight and Carson Paulik added seven.
"This is a good win for us against a team that only had one loss in conference play," Cass coach Eric Branz said. "Our defensive rotations were much better today and the times they weren't Rochester got open looks and knocked them down. For a good chunk of the game we did a better job taking care of the basketball against the changing pressure that Rochester uses. I am proud of how our kids battled and held their composure when Rochester tied it up late."
Cass led at all three quarter stops, including 11-10 after one, 22-19 at halftime and 35-34 after three.
Deeter hit two 3-pointers, Johnson had a basket and Hillis made three free throws in the fourth to help the Kings hold on and get their first win since the Taylor game on Jan. 20.
"There are some really good teams, players and coaches in the TRC," Branz said. "I knew that going into the year and we have stressed that to our players. Nobody in this conference can be overlooked. There are a lot of good shooters and athletic defenders. We played well today, and I am very proud of how we played at the defensive end. We still have a long way to go, but I do feel like our effort and focus at that end of the floor was much better today."
Cass hosts North Miami on Friday to close league play.
OAK HILL 76, LOGANSPORT 67
The Berries (8-10) were unable to back up their win over Harrison on Thursday in a loss at Oak Hill (9-8) on Saturday afternoon.
The Berries led 18-14 after one before they were outscored 25-7 in the second to trail 39-25 at halftime. They trailed 51-40 after three. The Golden Eagles shot 15 of 18 from the foul line (83%) in the fourth to hold on.
RJ Shugart scored 18 points to lead Oak Hill. Jace Tonagel had 17 points and seven assists. Colin Middlesworth scored 16, Trenton Sweet had 11 and Jackson Lamb added nine.
Jacob Taylor led the Berries with 17 points. Isaac Russell scored 12, Cooper Smith had 11 and Chris Del Valle and Carson Dubes had 10 apiece.
"Oak Hill is a really good team," Logan coach Matt Lange said. "We started off the game really well. We led by four in the first quarter and just went through a spell that's kind of plagued us all year where we have trouble scoring and it turned the momentum on us. They got some baskets and we were down at halftime. The third quarter they came out and turned it up again. I don't know if we had some tired legs from Thursday and maybe emotionally we were a little bit tired. But Oak Hill played hard the whole game and they were the better team today.
"When you've got five guys in double figures you don't think you're coming out with a loss but they scored more than we did. ... They're good. They play a good schedule and they've had the injury bug hit them over this time. From what I understand they've been up and down but we hit them in stride today, that's for sure."
Logan hosts Winamac on Tuesday night.
TRITON 54, CASTON 44
Caston (7-9, 2-2 HNAC) was defeated by visiting Triton (11-4, 4-0) Saturday afternoon.
Triton and LaVille are tied atop the HNAC standings at 4-0.
Triton led Caston 20-6 after one, 36-18 at halftime and 43-32 after three.
Freshman Lane Hook led the Comets with 13 points. Caleb Stinson and Grant Yadon had nine apiece, and Talon Zeider added six.
Gage Riffle led the Trojans with 18 points and Tanner Witt-Hoyo was also in double figures with 15.
"We put ourselves in a hole to start the game," Caston coach Carl Davis said. "Part of that was them hitting shots, but we had some communication and coverage breakdowns that gave them open looks. We didn't communicate at the level we needed to against a solid offensive team. We had a few spurts in the game when we were active on our rotations and anticipated some things for steals. A bright spot for the game was winning the turnover battle.
"They always do a great job of taking away clean perimeter shots, but our guys have improved at getting the ball inside. We had a number of post touches for our guards and our bigs. We just didn't finish as strong as we needed to in the paint. Our guys continue to improve. The consistency in those areas of improvement is going to be our key moving forward."
Caston travels to Argos on Tuesday.
