Prep Roundup: Willmar, Thole shut down Redwood Valley in boys hockey

Feb. 4—REDWOOD FALLS — Mason Thole made 19 saves to record the shutout in goal for the Willmar boys hockey team on Saturday.

Willmar beat Redwood Valley 4-0 in a non-conference game to boost its record to 6-15-1.

Cullen Gregory had a hat trick for Willmar, opening the scoring at 4:45 of the first period on the power play. He added two goals in the second period and assisted on Deiken Carruthers' goal in the first period.

Carruthers had a goal and two assists.

Willmar returns to Central Lakes Conference play at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Fergus Falls.

Trailing 18-12, New London-Spicer won the final six matches against Willmar to clinch a victory at the Battle for the Bolt Duals in Annandale.

Andrew Sandau (107 pounds), Brody Duke (172), Garret Leenstra (215) and Marshel Johnson (285) all won by fall for the Wildcats.

Conlan Carson (145) had a tech fall for the Cardinals. Cavin Carlson added bonus points with a major decision at 139.

NLS came into the match ranked 11th in Class AA, according to The Guillotine. Willmar is 10th in Class AAA.

The Wildcats are at the Quad County quadrangular at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Granite Falls. Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City and Fulda/Murray County Central are also slated to compete. The Cardinals are at the Perham triangular along with Moorhead at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Cavin and Conlan Carlson both had wins for Willmar in a dual loss to fourth-ranked (Class AAA) St. Michael-Albertville at Annandale.

Cavin won a 12-1 major decision at 133 pounds over Joe Scully. Conlan followed that up with a 21-8 major decision against Ian Schultz at 139. Conlan is ranked third at 145 while Schultz is sixth at 139.

Annandale/Maple Lake closed out its dual with 15 straight points to beat Willmar at the Lightning's home invitational.

Annandale/Maple Lake is ranked 12th in Class AA.

Ivan Mares (127 pounds) and Will Chavez (172) were both winners by fall for the Cardinals. Cavin Carlson (139), Conlan Carlson (145) and Cameren Champagne (160) each won their matches by tech fall.

Team United wound up with the West Central/Camden Conference combined championship at the Dawson-Boyd Community Center in Dawson.

Team United, made up of wrestlers from Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley and Montevideo, scored 237 points to beat second-place West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville, which had 164. Minnewaska finished fourth with 119, BOLD finished eighth with 58 and Quad County was 10th with 38.

BOLD's Austin Kiecker won his 200th career match on his way to the 152-pound title.

Other area individual champions include: United's Holland Schacherer at 133, Dan Gunlogson at 139, Kameron Sather at 145 and Brady Rhode at 285.

Minnewaska's Miles Wildman won the title at 114.
