Prep roundup: Slocum, St. Francis win regionals; Kingsley, Leland stay on track for NWC title showdown

Oct. 10—HOUGHTON LAKE — Grace Slocum won the Division 4 girls golf regional at Houghton Lake by 11 strokes, leading Traverse City St. Francis to a team championship as well.

Slocum shot a 5-over 77, even with an eight on The Quest Golf Course's toughest hole, the par-5 No. 7.

The Gladiators junior carded four birdies in the round to beat out runner-up and Elk Rapids senior Hope Hoedel by 11 shots. She birdied three of the five most difficult holes by handicap rating.

St. Francis won the team portion of the 11-squad tournament with a 384, 36 shots in front of second-place Charlevoix.

East Jordan placed third to also qualify for states, along with the Glads and Rayders.

Hoedel (88), Grayling junior Jessica Campbell (89) and Houghton Lake senior Mariah Thompson (106) earned the region's three individual state qualifier spots as the top three golfers not on a team headed to states. Thompson won a playoff tiebreaker over Kalkaska junior Alyssa Steiner for the final individual spot.

St. Francis senior Mary Kate Carroll placed fifth with a 93, and senior Avery Frederick (105, ninth) and junior Laurel Walter (109) closed out the Glads' counters.

Avery Kita took fourth with a 92 to lead the Rayders to the finals, joined by Emma Meadows (101, sixth), Macey McKeown (112) and Sarah Pletcher (115).

Olivia Maher shot 102 (seventh), Hannah Fortune 103 (eighth) and Lila Kelly 106 (10th) to all finish in the top 10 for East Jordan, with junior Maddy Bearden's 122 just enough to hold off Elk Rapids for the third team qualifier spot by two strokes.

Steiner, Thompson and Kelly tied for 10th, with Manistee senior Annika Haag, Harbor Springs junior Onika Alonzi and Walter making up the rest of the top 15.

The Division 4 state finals take place Oct. 20-21 at Bedford Valley Golf Club in Battle Creek.
