Prep roundup: NLS Wildcats take 4th at loaded Big Lake Invite

Jan. 7—BIG LAKE — The New London-Spicer gymnastics team took fourth of seven teams Saturday at the Big Lake Invitational.

The Wildcats scored 140.000 points. Monticello won with a 141.850, followed by Rogers' 140.950 and Becker's 140.350. Big Lake took fifth in 139.850.

Heading into the meet, Becker was ranked third in the state in Class by the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association. NLS was seventh and Big Lake was 10th.

The Wildcats' top finishers were Ciera Anderson and Abby Knudsen. Anderson finished fifth in the all-around scoring with a 35.900 and Knudsen was sixth in 35.550. Rogers' Sadie Zachman won with a 36.700.

Anderson tied for fifth place on the floor exercise with a 9.150. Knudsen was sixth in 9.100. The Wildcats' Kaitlyn Preheim took fifth on the balance beam in 9.050.

NLS next hosts Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted at 6 p.m. Tuesday at New London.

Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg emerged with the title at the seven-team Marshall Invitational.

Benson/KMS scored 135.125 to beat second-place Redwood Valley, which had a 132.625.

Gwen Wilcox took fourth in all-around scoring with a 33.925 for Benson/KMS.She finished second on the balance team with an 8.850.

Alexis Hoberg was second on the uneven parallel bars with an 8.000 for Benson/KMS.

Benson/KMS next competes at Melrose at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19.

The Willmar boys finished tied for 41st and the Cardinal girls tied for 44th place in a huge invitational at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.

"We had snow but still raced on the base of the downhill," Willmar head coach Bradley Haugen said. "(We had) good races for Willmar. Timothy Halvoerson had the best finish for Willmar since 2019."

Halvorson finished in 56th place in freestyle with a time of 12 minutes, 35.6 seconds. Andrew Garcia was 86th in classic with a 14:51.8 for the Cards.

In the girls' competition, Willmar's Emmie Larson placed 82nd in classic with a 17:34.0. Juliette Haugen was 120th in freestyle for 17:36.8 for the Cards.

There were 52 boys' teams and 49 girls' teams in the meet.

Willmar next competes against St. John's Prep at 1 p.m. Thursday at Collegeville.
