Prep roundup: Minnewaska, NLS place high at Melrose

Sep. 19—MELROSE — Minnewaska's girls and boys and New London-Spicer's boys were the top area team finishers Tuesday at the Melrose Invitational cross-country meet.

Minnewaska's girls finished with a 128 to take second place, just behind Breckenridge/Wahpeton, which had 80. NLS' girls were third with 128.

In the boys' division, NLS and Minnewaska each had 117 to tie for third. Pequot Lakes won with a 54 and Sauk Centre had 73.

Long Prairie-Grey Eagle's Caroline Kuehne was the girls' champion with a time of 19 minutes, 48.2 seconds. Madison Wendlandt of Paynesville/Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa was second with a 20:35.7. Minnewaska's Lauryn Ankeny finished third in 20:47.5

In the boys' race, SaukCentre's Jacob Drelow won in 17:10.4, edging Liam Zins of Pequot Lakes, who timed in at 17:14.0. Minnewaska's Maeson Tank took third in 17:29.1.

On the boys' side, Litchfield finished sixth with 143 points. Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg was 12th with a 281 and Paynesville was 13th with 337.

In the girls' division, Litchfield finished fifth with 178. Paynesville was ninth with 224. Benson/KMS took 14th with 303.

Lyla Stadtherr, Melena Longtin, Clare Barnstuble and Becca Femrite all won events for Minnewaska/Morris in a loss to Sauk Centre at Minnewaska High School in Glenwood.

Stadtherr won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 19.15 seconds. Longtin won the 100 freestyle (58.11), Barnstuble won in diving (199.75 points) and Femrite tied with the Mainstreeters' Stella Schirmers for the top spot in the 200 freestyle (2:13.42).

The Gators also had a victory in the 200 medley relay. Soffia Stadtherr, Lyla Stadtherr, Femrite and Isabel Guerra touched the board at 2:06.86.

Minnewaska/Morris heads to Fergus Falls at 11 a.m. Saturday.
