Prep roundup: Hartland gymnasts beat rivals, stay unbeaten

Hartland’s gymnastics team stayed undefeated by racking up victories over its two Livingston County rivals and Novi in a quad meet Friday night at High Flyers.

The Eagles scored 139.6 points, Howell 138.175, Brighton 135.45 and Novi 132.85.

Hartland is 7-0.

Howell’s Maria Petru took first place all-around with a score of 36.475. She was first on bars (9.275), first in floor exercise (9.55) and second on vault (9.1).

Brighton’s Anna Browne was second all-around with a score of 36.05. Browne had second-place finishes on bars (8.95) and beam (9.4).

Hartland’s Emma Beres was third all-around with a score of 34.425. Beres won vault (9.15).

Lexi Fundich was second on floor (9.05), Kate Gostlin was third on vault (8.95), Olivia Terrell was third on bars (8.8), Abby Griffen was third on floor (9.025) and Mack Wyatt was third on beam (8.925) for Hartland.

Hockey

Brighton 2, Marquette 1

Levi Pennala turned aside 26 of 27 shots for fourth-ranked Brighton (14-4-1) against a Marquette team that was 16-2 and ranked No. 3 in Division 3.

Cam Duffany scored in the first period and Eric House scored his first varsity goal in the second to give Brighton a 2-0 lead. Marquette’s Brody Sheldon scored with 55 seconds left in the game.

Girls basketball

Pinckney 51, Adrian 36

Pinckney junior Audrey Wardlow had 22 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

Savannah Shafer had 14 points for the Pirates (4-7).

Howell 41, Grand Ledge 28

Alison Farr had 11 points and eight rebounds, Gabby Piepho had 11 points and five steals, and Lexi Le had five points and six rebounds for Howell.

Fowlerville 57, Lansing Eastern 30

Mariah Kirby had 11 points, Michaela Gulledge 10 and Tommi Kleinschmidt nine for Fowlerville (6-6).

Boys basketball

Lansing Eastern 58, Fowlerville 56

Myles Edmond hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Lansing Eastern (7-8) the victory. Fowlerville rallied from a 15-point deficit to take the lead with 30 seconds left.

Wyatt Soli had 22 points, Brendan Ray 15 and Sam Shrader nine for Fowlerville (3-9). Dillon Wieas had 10 rebounds.

Charyl Stockwell 65, Westland Hope Christian 37

Drew Goodwin had 16 points and Sam Siebert 12, wile Parker Olejniczak and Paul Brown had eight each for Stockwell. David Wilson had eight assists and six steals for the Sentinels.

Swimming and diving

Brighton 117, Howell 64

Luke Newcomb won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.76 and 500 freestyle in 5:03.36, Spencer Sanders won the 100 butterfly in 1:00.67 and 100 breaststroke in 1:10.49, and Noah Shand won the 100 freestyle in 49.88 and 100 backstroke in 1:00.42 for Brighton.

Gries Kane won the 200 individual medley in 2:18.18 and Mason Staszel won the 50 freestyle in 23.29 for the Bulldogs.

Howell’s lone victory was by diver Peter Mick, who scored 241.60 points.

Pinckney 128, Ypsilanti 34

Talon Koppmann won the 50 freestyle in 22.86 seconds and 500 freestyle in 5:30.04, while Lucas Mondro won the 100 freestyle in 51.90 and 100 breaststroke in 1:10.35 for Pinckney.

Dylan Ray won the 100 butterfly in 56.62 and Anna Singleton won diving with a season-high 193.50 points for the Pirates.

Competitive cheer

KLAA West meet

For the second week in a row, a comeback in Round 3 determined first place in a clash between perennial state qualifiers Brighton and Hartland.

This time, it was Brighton that pulled out the victory in the six-team meet by a margin of 767.1 to 765.7 over Hartland. Brighton outscored Hartland 312.2 to 310.4 in Round 3. Hartland won the first KLAA West meet.

Howell was third with 690.76 points.

Skiing

Mt. Brighton giant slalom

In the boys meet, Howell’s Alex Cotton took first place in 33.12 seconds. Brighton’s Erik DeKeyser was 10th and Charyl Stockwell’s Teddy Gottbreht was 13th.

Stockwell was sixth and Brighton was seventh after top skier John Popov didn’t finish his second run after placing second after his first.

Brighton’s girls took second by a 19-23 margin to Birmingham.

Abby Storch was second, Payton Wedekemper fourth, Cecilia Pruski eighth and Brenna Waid ninth for the Bulldogs.

Boys bowling

Brighton 24, Howell 6

Joey Coleman rolled a 205 game and a 407 series for Brighton.

Girls bowling

Howell 22.5, Brighton 7.5

Lillian Smiley had a 264 series for Brighton.
