Prep roundup: Hartland beats No. 10 Canton to prep for girls soccer showdown with Brighton

Hartland’s girls soccer team continued to prove itself against tough competition, beating 10th-ranked Canton 3-1 Tuesday night.

The Eagles (4-1), ranked No. 6 in Division 1, were coming off victories against perennial powers Northville and Okemos. They will get another big test when they host archrival Brighton at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Josie Cheyne scored off a pass from freshman Claire L’Esperance just two minutes and 30 seconds into the game to give Hartland a quick lead. Alyse Daavettila scored from Addie Frantti 28 minutes into the game to make it 2-0.

Canton cut the lead to 2-1 midway through the second half, but Frantti scored three minutes later to restore Hartland’s two-goal cushion.

Sophomore Marissa Ramirez came up from the junior varsity because of an injury to Hartland’s starting goalie and made four saves.

“Overall, we played really well,” Hartland coach Andrew Kartsounes said. “Canton was ranked No. 10 in the state. We had a fast start today, which is the first time for that. We’ve really been trying to work on having better starts. Then we played a really composed game the entire time.”

Brighton 4, Novi 1

Brynn Bobby scored twice, as Brighton (4-1) won its fourth straight game.

Irene Kiilunen and Elaina Vandemergel scored off corner kicks by Olivia Sebestyen.

Pinckney 15, Stockbridge 0

Nine Pinckney players scored goals in a blowout victory, led by Val Graves with three.

Four-year starting goalie Peyton Delongchamp came out of the net and scored twice. Alexis Altizer, Zaryah Griffin and Addy Lovell scored two goals each for the Pirates (2-0).

Kinley Mays Alex Hanselman, Brooke Standford and Mackenna Prince had the other goals.

Boys lacrosse

Hartland 14, Lake Orion 13 (2 OT)

Jacob Ross scored his second goal of the game in the second overtime to give Hartland (2-0) the victory.

Drew Lockwood scored five goals and four assists, while Jake Lewis had three goals and one assist for the Eagles.

Dylan Ayotte, David Bulloch, Easton Culver and Max Kotsilidis scored Hartland’s other goals.

Forest Hills Central 10, Brighton 8

Zach Watkins scored twice for Brighton (4-1) in a loss to the two-time defending state Division 2 champion.

Girls lacrosse

Brighton 21, Okemos 2

Brighton geared up for a rematch of the past two state Division 1 championship games with a rout of Okemos.

Ella Toth had six goals and one assist, Georgia Gill had five goals and one assist, Sophia Heady had four goals and four assists, Cece Mainhardt had two goals and two assists, and Isabella Orton had two goals for Brighton.

The Bulldogs will travel to Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern at 6 p.m. Thursday. Brighton beat the Forest Hills Northern-Eastern co-op in the last two state championship games.

Grand Ledge 14, Howell 4

Ava Deyo and Sophia Balla each scored twice for Howell, which showed improvement from a 19-0 loss to Grand Ledge in its inaugural game last season.

Boys track and field

Brighton 75, Canton 62

Brighton senior Luke Campbell won the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 2.38 seconds and the 1600 in 4:26.87.

Girls track and field

Brighton 108, Canton 29

Addison Payne won the 200 in 27.24 seconds, the 400 in 1:00.03 and was on two winning relays for Brighton.

Abby Mainka won shot put and discus for the Bulldogs.

Brighton’s distance crew ran impressive early-season times, with Gabrielle Bolitho winning the 800 in 2:23.28, Nikki Carothers the 1600 in 5:30.11 and Elle Bissett the 3200 in 11:15.91.

Golf

Pinckney 183, Stockbridge 193

Mike Kundrot and Carson Plante shot 45s to lead Pinckney. Will Lawver shot 46 and Noah Stahl 47 to complete the Pirates’ score.

Softball

Fowlerville 18, Ionia 1

Fowlerville 16, Ionia 1

Fowlerville senior Tori Briggs was 4-for-6 with a home run, triple, double and seven RBIs in the doubleheader.

Tommi Kleinschmidt was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Tara Peterson was 3-for-3 in the first game.

In the second game, McKayla Fletcher homered and McKenna Maybee was 3-for-3.
