Prep Roundup: Elk Rapids beats St. Francis to overtake lead in Lake Michigan Conference; Hicks' 31, Wilder's 19 lead Manton to boys, girls sweep of Evart

Jan. 26—TRAVERSE CITY — Both Traverse City St. Francis and Elk Rapids came into Friday on a three-game win streak, so something had to give when the two Lake Michigan Conference foes squared off at St. Francis.

It would be the visiting Elks who turned that "3" into a "4" with a 57-51 victory, moving Elk Rapids into the lead of the LMC by a half-game over St. Francis.

"We're feeling pretty good," Elk Rapids head coach Kevin Ball said. "It's always good to get a win at St. Francis, and I feel like our boys are playing well and learning how to compete. They've really turned a corner, and it's fun to watch them grow."

Keagen Cotterman and Noah Hill each led Elk Rapids (8-7, 7-2 Lake Michigan) with 11 points apiece. Hilley also had four steals. Owen Spencer also hit double figures with 10 points and five rebounds.

The Elks hope to hold on to the LMC lead when they welcome Harbor Springs on Tuesday.

St. Francis falls out of the top spot in the LMC, moving to 7-5 overall and 6-2 in the conference. Max Ogden paced the Gladiators with 20 points and four rebounds. Michael Bohrer chipped in with eight points.

The Elks got the drop on the Glads in both the JV and freshman contests as well, winning 49-48 in the JV game and 28-21 in the freshman game. Jake Bixby led the JV Gladiators with 16 points followed by Louis Rhein with 10 and George Heeringa with six.

The JV team is now 9-3 and 6-2 in the LMC. The freshman squad is 8-4 and 6-1 in conference play.
