Prep roundup: Big Reds win fourth straight

Jan. 23—CENTERVILLE — Malachi Rice led the Big Reds with 20 points, narrowly edging out his brother for top scoring honors, as the Big Reds securing their fourth straight win in a five-day stretch with a 79-52 non-conference victory over Mount Ayr on Monday at Lakeview Gymnasium.

Keith Rice added 19 points on Monday for Centerville while Ryan Sinnott scored 11. The Big Reds entered the game having won three consecutive South Central Conference contests over Davis County, Albia and Chariton by a combined 11 points.

After having Tuesday's trip to Knoxville called off due to weather, Centerville (9-5, 6-4 SCC) is scheduled to be back in action on Thursday at Cardinal.

Pekin 63, Columbus 47

COLUMBUS — Sven Dahlstrom scored a team-leading 19 points for the Panthers while JaeDon Wolver challenged the school's single-game record for rebounds in a Southeast Iowa Superconference north division road win on Saturday.

Wolver produced a double-double for Pekin, scoring 16 points while grabbing 23 rebounds coming within two of Keaton Winn's 25-rebound single-game school record. Will Adam added 12 points for the Panthers.

Pekin (7-6, 7-3 SEI north) heads to Pella Christian on Thursday.

Murray 71, Moulton-Udell 41

MOULTON — Cameron Swarts splashed in seven shots from 3-point range for the Eagles as part of a 29-point night in a Bluegrass Conference loss to the Mustangs.

M-U (5-5, 2-4 Bluegrass) continues play in the conference tournament this week.

Williamsburg 65, Fairfield 44

WILLIAMSBURG — Riley Perkins scored 19 points while collecting four rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists in a non-conference road loss on Monday to the Raiders.

Fairfield (1-12) returns to Southeast Conference play on Thursday at home against Fort Madison.

Central Lee 90, Van Buren County 57

KEOSAUQUA — Brayden Wyrick's 34-point, 11-rebound double-double led the Hawks to a Southeast Iowa Superconference south division win over the Warriors on Friday.

Izaak Loeffler led Van Buren County with 21 points. Lucas Fett added 17 points and a team-leading six rebounds for the Warriors.

Van Buren County (2-11, 1-10 SEI south) hosts Holy Trinity on Friday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Van Buren County 52, Central Lee 43

KEOSAUQUA — Ivy Davidson led the Warriors with an 18-point, 15-rebound double-double in a Southeast Iowa Superconference south division win.

Sophia Jirak added 12 points, six rebounds and a team-leading four assists for Van Buren County. Marlee Mertens scored 10 points and six rebounds as the Warriors pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Central Lee 17-8 over the final eight minutes.

Van Buren County (5-8, 3-6 SEI south) heads to Danville on Tuesday.

No. 14 (3A) Chariton 64, Centerville 20

CHARITON — Mckenzie Snook's 18 points and six assists helped the 14th-ranked Chargers set a fast pace in Saturday's South Central Conference make-up contest with the Redettes.

Chariton never looked back after jumping out to a 29-5 lead after one quarter. Adriana Howard led Centerville with 11 points.

Centerville (2-11, 1-9 SCC) travels to Knoxville on Tuesday.

Columbus 43, Pekin 37

COLUMBUS — Isabel Rendon scored a game-high 16 points for the Wildcats, who held on in the fourth quarter to edge the Panthers in a Southeast Iowa Superconference north division contest.

Ariana Vergara added 10 points and eight rebounds for Columbus. Anna Hadley and Alex Parsons each scored seven points to pace Pekin while combining for 28 rebounds with Parsons grabbing a career-high 17 boards.

Pekin (5-8) heads to Hillcrest Academy on Tuesday.

Washington 36, Fairfield 32

WASHINGTON — Adalyn Long shook an injury on the final play of the first half, returning to the game to lead the Demons with 10 points in a narrow Southeast Conference win over the Trojans.

Savannah Hollander led Fairfield with a game-high 13 points. The Trojans outscored Washington 11-5 in the third quarter, taking a 25-24 lead into the fourth before the Demons rallied late to clinch the victory.

Fairfield (2-10, 0-6 Southeast) hosts Fort Madison on Thursday.

Orient-Macksburg 47, Moulton-Udell 32

MOULTON — Miah Burgher led the Eagles with a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double in a Bluegrass Conference tournament opening round contest.

Madison Barber added eight points, six rebounds and three blocks for M-U. Rachel Ogden added six points and eight boards.

Moulton-Udell (0-13) heads to Diagonal on Thursday.
