Prep report: Soumis spurs Hawks to Lake Superior Classic victory

Jan. 6—Abe Soumis had a huge game on a big stage, scoring 43 points as the Hermantown Hawks outgunned Becker 94-83 in a Lake Superior Classic game at Duluth East High School on Saturday.

Soumis showed good balance, scoring 20 in the first half and 23 in the second, and combined twos, threes and free throws as the Hawks led 52-43 at the half and held on through the second period.

Nathan Hill added 15 points for the Hawks.

The Spartans took over a close game in the second half with the help of some of Isaac Peterson's seven 3-pointers in their Lake Superior Classic game at Duluth East High School on Saturday, Jan. 6.

Tre Sanigar and Brandon Aker scored 10 points apiece in the decisive second half as the Spartans outscored the Rebels 45-29.

Peterson finished with a game-high 21 points for Superior, while Calvin Anderson finished with 19, Aker 16 and Sanigar 14.

For MLWR, Nolan Nelson scored 18 and Eli Youngs and Adam Neumann had 15 apiece.

The Bombers' Hayden Charboneau had a milestone moment on Saturday, Jan. 6, as he reached 1,000 career points in his team's nonconference home win.

Charboneau finished with a team-high 21 points, but was one of five Barnum players to score in double figures. Charboneau, who now has 1,014 career points, made five of his team's 10 3-pointers.

Esko may have been without Koi Perich (at the All-American Bowl football game) but they had more than enough for Perham on Saturday, Jan. 6 in Esko.

The hosts scored 53 first-half points, more than double what the Yellowjackets achieved.

Sam Haugen dropped 28 points and made five triples, while Dalton Spindler and Braedyn Male scored 17 apiece.

The host Greyhounds came up a couple buckets short in the nightcap of the Lake Superior Classic on Saturday.

Bjorn Lind scored 12 of his 19 points in the second half for East, while Ty Nyberg added 17.

The coaching matchup pitted East coach Rhett McDonald's squad against a Rangers team piloted by his younger brother Kyle.

Maija Lamppa came up big in the clutch, sinking both ends of a 1-and-1 with 3.4 seconds left to give the Wolverines the lead for good in a tight contest at the Lake Superior Classic at Duluth East.

Anna Westby led Rock Ridge with 17 points, while Maija Lamppa scored 15 and Lexi Lamppa 13.

Regan Juenemann made four 3-pointers in a team-best 18 points for Marshall, while Chloe Johnson scored 13 but couldn't get an off-balance jumper to go at the buzzer.

The MI-B Rangers worked around an off day shooting from Jordan Zubich and still took down the C-I Rangers at the Lake Superior Classic on Saturday.

Ann Neyens made five 3-pointers an scored a team-best 21 and Hali Savela had three en route to 16 points. Zubich was 2-for-10 from the floor but still provide 12 points, seven assists an six rebounds.

C-I star Tori Oehrlein finished with 39 points.

Esko pulled away in the second half, holding Bemidji to just 13 points after the break for a nonconference road win. Cairin Berger was too much for the Lumberjacks to handle, scoring 22 points, while Clara Swanson added 18 and Kyra Johnson 12.

Kait LaDuke made four first-half treys for Bemidji and finished with a team-best 13 points but was ineligible for the second half after playing in both halves of the JV game.

The Patriots had too much for the Lumberjacks on Saturday, Jan. 6 in Pequot Lakes, as five players scored in double figures.

Cloquet (8-5) fell behind 42-27 in the first half, which was too much to overcome even though Kiley Issendorf finished with 21 points and Leilani Fonoti 15.

A 5-1 victory for St. Thomas Academy over Tartan on Saturday afternoon against Tartan was the 700th in the high school coaching career of former Duluth East boss Mike Randolph.

Randolph is in his third season at St. Thomas after more than 600 wins over 36 seasons with the Greyhounds. That tenure ended in 2021 with Randolph's resignation, citing parental pressure and lack of administrative support, though the district confirmed he was under investigation at that time after undisclosed complaints were filed against him.

After one season as the JV coach for the Cadets, Randolph took over the varsity squad. He is now within closing distance of the all-time state mark of 707 from former Rochester Mayo coach Lorne Grosso.

The Hawks withstood a furious comeback from the Eagles, who scored four times in the last 15 minutes.

Hermantown led 2-0 after two periods on second-period goals from River Freeman and Will Esterbrooks, then quickly doubled their lead on goals 15 seconds apart from Jack Slattengren and Esterbooks at 1:26 and 1:41 of the third period. Eden Prairie started its counterattack just 52 seconds later but came up a goal short after Cole Saterdalen scored his two goals at 15:08 and 16:25 of the third frame.

Dane Callaway made 32 saves for Hermantown (9-2-2).

Tanner Ross scored first and last for the Rails (11-5) in a road win at the Bronco Arena.

The Proctor defense held the Broncos to 13 shots on goal, 12 of which were stopped by A.J. Reyelts.

Kaenan Smith's 42-save effort helped the Hilltoppers grab a road win at Graham Arena in Rochester.

Pacey Adduono scored goals 1:44 apart in the second period to break a 1-1 tie. Thomas Ojard had a pair of assists.

The Storm held the Greyhounds to 12 shots on goal in a dominant win at Essentia Duluth Heritage Center

Gavin Uhlenkamp scored twice and Jack Christ posted four assists.

Drew Raukar made 34 saves for East (3-10-1).

Kalvin Stengrim scored twice for the Warriors and Ryan Gerlich stopped all 21 shots he saw as CEC suffered a shutout loss on Saturday, Jan. 6 at Northwoods Credit Union Arena.

Jacob Iallonardo made 14 saves and Caden Kubis 13, with Kubis working two periods and Iallonardo one in goal for the Lumberjacks (8-6).

Adalyn Benson and Isabella Tompson scored two goals apiece as the Spartans took down the Stars on Saturday in Superior.

Goals from Emma Ferg and Thompson just 14 seconds apart in the first period gave Superior the lead for good. Superior got goals from Benson and Katelyn Stamper 20 seconds apart in the second period to make it 5-1.

Kaylie Nault made 15 saves for Superior (15-1).

Allie Jones scored a power-play goal for the Lumberjacks but three first-period goals for the host Packers were too much to overcome on Saturday at Doug Woog Arena.

Izabella Strang made 24 saves for CEC.

Grand Rapids was the top team by a decisive margin at the Superior Spartan Classic on Saturday, scoring 125 points and winning four weight classes.

Northwestern finished tied for third with 72 points, while Proctor/Hermantown tied for eighth and Superior was 11th.

Tanner Morlan was a 4-0 winner in the 157 championship, while Warren Ritter took 150, Justin Jobe 144 and Asher Brenden 126.

Zak McPhee of Proctor/Hermantown won the 190-pound bracket, winning all five of his matches by fall.

Dutch Hedblom of Rock Ridge prevailed by a major decision in the 132 final, while Gage Benz of the Wolverines pinned his championship opponent at 106.

The 200-yard medley relay team got the annual Duluth Invitational off to a good start for the home side, with Landon West, Seiji Sudoh, Joey Zelen and Lucas Warren winning in 1 minute, 41.44 seconds.

Zelen was a clear winner in 21.61 in the 50 free and in 48.28 in the 100 free, while Travis Elling and Elliot Yung joined West and Zelen in a successful 400 free relay (3:20.43).
