Prep report: Kastern scores 42, Taggart gets 1,000th for Eagles

Jan. 15—Solon Springs senior Isaiah Kastern scored 42 points in the Eagles' 89-41 home win over Mellen Monday.

Solon Springs jumped out to a 46-28 lead at halftime, and then the defense really clamped down. Over the final 18 minutes, the Eagles allowed just 13 points.

Dylan Taggart scored 17 points to joined Kastern in double figures for the Eagles. His first bucket of the night put him over 1,000 points for his career.

Mellen was led by 11 from Xander Beeksma and 10 from Jehiel Zielke.

Kastern, a Bemidji State commit and

the 2023 Superior Telegram All-Area Player of the Year

, has led the Eagles to an 8-1 record and a No. 1 ranking in Wisconsin Division 5.

Mountain Iron-Buhl's Chris King scored 26 points and T.J. Duchamp had 25, but the Rangers had to squeak out a 71-70 win over Greenway Monday.

MIB took a 37-27 lead into the locker room at halftime, but the Raiders mounted a furious comeback in the second half only to fall one point short.

Stephen McGee scored 21 points for Greenway and Gage Olson had 17.

Duluth Marshall gained the upper hand in what was a lengthy defensive struggle against Holy Angels in the MLK Classic on Monday afternoon at St. Catherine University in St. Paul.

The Hilltoppers only scored 51 points in regulation, which would be their lowest output of the season, but they got the stops necessary to extend the game to overtime. After both sides put up seven points in the extra session, the Hilltoppers pitched a shutout in the second OT to finish off their eighth win of the season.

Regan Juenemann finished with a game-high 18 points and Chloe Johnson added 17. Marshall kept the Stars in line, as no Holy Angels player had more than Kiera O'Rourke's 12.

Cloquet sophomore Lauren Hughes had 15 and senior Ava Carlson had 14, but the Lumberjacks couldn't keep pace in a 66-56 loss to Holy Family Monday at St. Catherine University in St. Paul.

Joceyln Land had 34 points for Holy Family to lead all scorers, while Katie McColm had 13 Berkley Neubauer had 12.

After starting 8-0, the Lumberjacks have now lost seven straight. Cloquet will next play on Friday at Hibbing.

Chisholm's Tresa Baumgard racked up 22 points to lift the Bluestreaks to a 59-47 win over Hill City/Northland Monday.

The Bluestreaks jumped out to a 32-24 lead at halftime and held on for the win. Olivia Pascuzzi joined Baumgard in double figures with 17.

Lainee Spangler scored 19 for Hill City/Northland.

Two Harbors' Rachel Bopp scored 21 points to lead the Agates in a 60-45 home win over Duluth Denfeld Monday.

The Agates stormed out to a 38-20 halftime lead and cruised to the win.

Olivia Hagglund and Belle Bolle joined Bopp in double figures with 11 points each.

Maurissa Hendricks led Denfeld with 11 points, and Victoria Nylund scored 10.

Proctor senior Lily Smith had 19 points and sophomore Chloe Carlson had 18 to help the Rails squeeze by Cromwell-Wright 59-56 Monday.

The Cardinals led 27-24 at halftime, but the Proctor offense came to life in the second half with 35 points.

Isabella Anderson was the lone Cromwell-Wright player in double figures, with 10 points, but four other Cardinals — including Bryanna Foster, Emaleigh Olesiak, Siiena Anderson and Kyra Granholm — scored at least eight.

Carlton/Wrenshall senior Megan Matarelli led all scorers with 16 points, but the Raptors couldn't match the balance of McGregor in a 59-38 loss Monday.

The Mercuries got 11 points from Courtney Gauthier and Claire Geyen to take the win.

Moose Lake Area's Gracie Hartl scored the equalizer at the 5:39 mark of the third period, but the Rebels settled for a tie with Gentry Academy Monday in Moose Lake.

Gentry's Ana Myers scored early in the first period to put her team in front, neither team could find a game-winner even with eight extra minutes on the ice.

Mallory Hartl stopped 24 shots for Moose Lake and Isabelle Deutz made 18 saves for Gentry.

Despite four opportunities over the first three periods, Moose Lake Area failed to score on any of its power play chances.
