PREP GOLF: Raiders rewrite record books; team heads to state in school's first appearance

Sep. 22—KENDALLVILLE — The curtain closed on the IHSAA regional round in Kendallville Friday afternoon, but not without a shining performance from Northridge girl's golf to send itself to the state finals for the first time in program history.

The Raiders, who shot a team score of 319, had enough in the tank to power past a strong Culver Academy (324) and DeKalb (322) squad in a tight race for the final spot.

For making the three-team cut, the Raiders season will continue next week.

That two-day fray will begin next Friday, Sept. 29, in Carmel at Prairie View Golf Club where the competitors will get two days and 36 holes to vie for a state title.

For Northridge to advance, the depth had to show up as well as the top of the card to do its job. That happened, and Karisa Dyer's 71 from the No. 1 spot in the lineup paired with Macey Riegsecker's 84 from the No. 5 spot (placing third on the Raiders) accomplished both.

Dyer shot one-over on the par-70 course to lead the group with sophomore Alex Reschly adding a score of 78, Riegsecker's 84 jumping in for third and Lizzy Irving shooting an 86 to round out the scoring.

Ken Brewster's group went undefeated in the regular season but suffered a second-place finish at sectionals to Fort Wayne Carroll in Middlebury. Northridge had been seeded fourth by sectional scores, trailing Homestead, Carroll and Culver.

The Chargers placed six strokes in front of the Raiders again, scoring 313 and placing second. First place was unsurprisingly claimed by Homestead (290).

Also in The Goshen News' area was Concord as well as two individuals from both Fairfield and NorthWood.

The Minutemen, led by coach Cate Tompkins finished 10th with a season low 388 on the day. That effort was led by Mia McEachern (95), Mahra Chris (97), Avery McDowell (97) and Annika Troyer (99).

NorthWood's Sophie Richmond (78), Joey Slone (89) and Fairfield's Addie Mast (79) and Mallory McGowen (96) summed up other area scores. All were left outside the top three individuals to advance.

The Northridge team has used its experience as its strength this season, returning all five members of the starting lineup from the year prior.

That experience will shorten this coming week with Dyer as the only member having prior history at the state competition. She finished tied for 71st her sophomore year, scoring 188 across the two days of action.

The IHSAA state finals begin Friday, Sept. 29, and run into the following Saturday.
