Prep Football Stat Leaders: Monroe County Region's best in 2023
Quarterback and running backs usually get the headlines, but several kickers in the Monroe County region had seasons worth nothing this year.
Nolan Zajac of Airport and Kyler Ostrowski both kicked more than 50 extra points and were good on six field goals each. Flat Rock’s Mitchell Smith made 39 extra point attempts and his kickoffs into the end zone was a big reason why the Rams beat Summit Academy in the District finals.
Bedford’s Jack Decker was good on all 20 of his extra point attempts for the Mules and made three field goals.
Even Whiteford, which rarely kicked over the last decade or so, got a record-setting 38-yard field goal and 15 extra points kicks from its kicker, Hunter DeBarr.
While the kickers were outstanding, so were Izaiah Wright of Carlson and Brian Booms of Flat Rock.
Wright led the Region in rushing yards with 1,965. Booms got the advantage in touchdowns (32) and points scored (197). Wright’s rushing yards is good for a top 10 spot in region single season history and second in Carlson history behind Chad Schoen’s 2,135 yards in 2004.

Flat Rock also had the Region passing leader in Graham Junge, who threw for 2,419 yards and 27 touchdowns.
Five region quarterbacks reached 1,000 yards passing. The others were Cooper Nye of Airport, Vaughn Brown of Erie Mason, Joe Krolak of Carlson and freshman Tre Eitniear of Whiteford, who started all 14 games while Whiteford reached the state finals.
Whiteford wide receiver Kolby Masserant just missed becoming just the third receiver in Region history to record 1,000 yards receiving in a single season. He had a Region-best 46 catches for 989 yards. On defense, he was the region leader in interceptions with six. Teammate Jake Iott led the region in tackles with 162.
