Prep Football Roundup: NLS wins 'Rock-em-sock-em dog fight'

Oct. 31—ALBANY — Fourth-seeded New London-Spicer upset top-seeded Albany 14-12 on Saturday at Michael Field to advance to the Section 6AAA championship.

The Wildcats' will play second-seeded Pierz at 7 p.m. Friday. The location is to be announced, but it will be a neutral site.

Every score occurred in the first half..

With Albany failing on both of its two-point conversions, the Wildcats escaped with the victory.

"It was a rock-em-sock-em dog fight all night long," NLS coach Chad Gustafson said.

NLS took the lead on a 15-yard connection between senior receiver Brycen Christensen and quarterback Kyle Doty. Following a successful kick attempt by Gabe Rohman, the Wildcats' took a 7-0 lead into the second quarter.

Albany answered with a 6-yard touchdown run in the second by Carter Birr, but failed on a two-point pass attempt to trail 7-6.

NLS scored its second touchdown on a 3-yard run by senior Connor Rothwell, with another successful kick by Rohman.

Albany scored its final touchdown with receiver Carter Voss connecting with Birr for a 15-yard score. Albany failed on a two-point run attempt, leaving it at 14-12.

"I told them you have to want it more than they want it, you have to play together and play for each other," Gustafson said.

NLS successfully converted on a 4th-and-1 near the end of the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

"We're super excited," Gustafson said. "People counted us out because we lost some close games in a tough conference.

"But the kids never gave up and kept fighting and scratching. Now we're excited to be in the section championship."

It's NLS's first section championship game since 2018, when the Wildcats lost to Pierz 44-6.

"I know they have a great program. But we're going in there to try and win that game, not just play for it," Gustafson said.
