PREP CROSS COUNTRY: Russell, Potter make state tournament

Oct. 28—DECATUR — For the third straight year, Oakwood/Salt Fork's Macie Russell will participate in the IHSA Class 1A State Cross Country meet.

The senior runner ended up 13th with a time of 19 minutes, 28 seconds in Saturday's sectional meet at Decatur's South Shores Park and she was glad that her teammates were in attendance.

"This year it was different because we went to sectionals as a team," Russell said. "This is my senior year and I had one last chance and that was my mindset in making it count."

She will not be the only local runner at Peoria's Detweiler Park next week as Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin's Aleah Potter will also be there.

Potter, in her sophomore year, was 23rd with a time of 20 minutes, 9 seconds to get the last qualifying spot for individual runners.

Both OSF and BHRA had teams in the sectional, with BHRA taking 13th led by Potter and Gabby Moreman, who was 76th (22:08) and OSF was 17th with Russell's and teammate Callie Richardson (30th, 20:22) leading the way.

Chrisman/Georgetown-Ridge Farm's Leah Phipps was 46th (20:57), while Armstrong-Potomac's Kayla Crull was 110th (23:33).

In the boys meet, Notre Dame de La Salette Academy was third as a team and was led by Marco Cruz, who was 17th (16:24) and John Brauner, who was 18th (16:24).

Chrisman/Georgetown-Ridge Farm's Seth Ellis was 63rd (17:38), while OSF's Thomas Wells was 70th (17:41).
