Prep basketball roundup for Dec. 5: Mount Vernon/Plankinton opens with a home victory over MCM

Dec. 5—MOUNT VERNON, S.D. — Mount Vernon/Plankinton scored 35 points in the first half and doubled up visiting McCook Central/Montrose 65-32 on Tuesday night in a season-opening girls basketball contest for both teams.

A 17-4 margin in the second quarter widened the MVP lead to 35-14 at halftime, and the Titans outscored MCM 21-8 in the third period to pick up a victory.

MVP's Reagan Rus logged 23 points, four rebounds and three steals, while running mate Emilee Fox had 20 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals. Vanessa Hoffman scored seven points and Kyia Schmidt had six points for the Titans.

For MCM, Cami McGuire posted nine points, with seven points from Ashtyn Deknikker.

MVP (1-0) will play again on Thursday, Dec. 14 when it hosts Miller in Plankinton. MCM (0-1) will travel to Parker on Saturday, Dec. 9.

* A 16-7 second quarter margin helped Arlington to a 63-41 victory against Howard. Addalyn Steffensen had a game-high 19 points and Jaelyn Huntimer collected 13 points and five assists for the Cardinals. Abby Aslesen recorded 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Tigers.

* A 20-3 first quarter margin powered Tripp-Delmont/Armour to a 44-14 win at Colome. Megan Reiner had 19 points, four assists and five steals, while Kinley Spaans had 14 points and six rebounds. TDA had 21 steals and held Colome to 12% shooting in the game. Shaleena Kingsley had six points and eight rebounds for the Cowgirls.

* Centerville outscored Canistota 37-20 in the second half on the way to a 65-38 win in girls basketball action. Thea Gust had 16 points for the Tornadoes, while Emma Marshall had 14 points. Kayla Papendick had 14 points for the Hawks in the loss.

* Avon's McKenna Kocmich had 15 points and Courtney Sees posted 13 points, six assists and four steals for the Pirates in a 57-37 win over Gregory. Lila Vanderlei had 12 rebounds for Avon. Asia VanDerWerff had 13 points and Ashlyn Vosika had 10 points for Gregory, which also had eight points and seven rebounds from Ella Sperl.

* Avery Orth's double-double helped power Wessington Springs to a 46-26 victory over Wolsey-Wessington. Orth finished with 28 points and 18 rebounds for the Spartans and Alyssa Grohs had five points and five rebounds as well. Payton Kemnitz had 14 points for the Warbirds.

* Dani Highum had 24 points and nine rebounds for Lennox in a road win at Dakota Valley by a 56-47 score. Ryan Hanssen and Carli Kuyper both scored 11 points for Lennox, while Ella Otten had 18 points for the Panthers.

* Stevie Wittler had 32 points on 12-for-23 shooting with eight assists, six rebounds and five steals for Sully Buttes in a 65-30 win at Ipswich.

* Oakley Weber's 16 points, seven rebounds, and four steals help Bridgewater-Emery defeat Scotland 38-23. Hayden Hofer also had seven points and Summer Koch grabbed seven boards for the Huskies. Trinity Bietz had eight points and seven rebounds for the Highlanders.
