Prep baseball playoff roundup: Georgetown, Round Rock, Westlake win Game 1s on walkoffs

There wasn’t any lack of drama for Austin-area teams on the first night of the area round baseball playoffs.

Georgetown, Round Rock and Westlake all won Game 1 of their respective best-of-three series on walkoffs Thursday and will try and complete sweeps to advance to the regional quarterfinals with wins Friday.

On the less dramatic side, Cedar Park shutout Medina Valley 5-0 to take early control of that series.

Other teams start the area round today, with Lake Travis and San Marcos playing at Dripping Springs, Rouse facing San Antonio Alamo Heights at Concordia University and Pflugerville taking on Magnolia West at East View.Here’s a look at the Class 6A and 5A action from Thursday:

Class 6A

Round Rock 8, SA Reagan 7: Rhenn Adrewartha’s single to deep short with the bases loaded that scored Hudson Ellis gave the Dragons their walkoff win in bottom of the 11th at Concordia University.

Round Rock trailed 7-6 entering its half of the 11th, but David Bradley, Ellis, Devin Petry and Nicholas Dunch drew walks to tie the game to set the scene for Andrewartha’s at-bat.

The Dragons pushed across six runs in the fifth highlighted by Ellis’ two-run double, Dunch’s run-scoring double and Cole Cravens’ two-run single to take a 6-2 lead.

But the Rattlers scored four times in the seventh, with Brennan Greer hitting a three-run homer, to force extra innings.

Andrew Ermis’ RBI single gave Reagan its lead in the 11th prior to Round Rock’s rally.

Adrewartha, Ellis and Cravens all finished with two hits for the Dragons, while Travis Sykora struck out 11 in six innings on the mound.

Game 2 is Friday at North East Sports Park in San Antonio.

Westlake 5, SA Brandeis 4: Isaac Beeler’s solo home run in the bottom of the 12th gave the Chaps their walkoff win in a wild atmosphere at Westlake.

Leading off the inning, Beeler took a 3-2 pitch over the left-field wall to send the Chaps dugout streaming onto the field.

Westlake trailed 4-0 entering its half of the fourth, but Will Magids and Ben Longoria had RBI singles to cut the Chaps deficit in half, then Nathan Duvall tied the game with a two-run single in the fifth.

Duvall threw seven scoreless innings in relief to earn the win, striking out eight and yielding only two hits.

Braeden Babb went 3-for-5 at the plate to pace the Westlake offense.

Game 2 is Friday at Northside ISD Park in San Antonio.

SA Johnson 2, Bowie 0: The Bulldogs only managed four hits at North East ISD Sports Park in San Antonio and will hope to even the series Friday in Game 2 at Burger Stadium.

Class 5A

Georgetown 2, A&M Consolidated 1: Brady Peters’ RBI single to right in the bottom of the seventh gave the Eagles their walkoff win at Georgetown High School.

Jacob Faltesek doubled with one out, then scored two batters later on Peters’ hit.

Kyle Roppolo didn’t allow a hit in 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win.

Andrew Nations doubled and eventually scored in the second to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead prior to the Tigers manufacturing a run in the fourth.

Game 2 is Friday A&M Consolidated.

Cedar Park 5, Medina Valley 0: Drew Robertson scattered three hits and struck out seven in six innings and Jake Cowlishaw belted a two-run triple to lead the Timberwolves at Cedar Park High School.

Brady Richardson’s RBI single in the third gave Cedar Park all the offense it would need, with Cowlishaw providing his key hit later in the inning.

Kade Davis’ run-scoring single in the fourth and Logan Hedges singling and eventually scoring in the sixth rounded out the Timberwolves offense.

Cowlishaw, Davis and Hedges all finished with two hits, while Parker Greene closed out the seventh.

Game 2 is Friday at Medina Valley.
