He was a home run short of the cycle in the first game of a doubleheader versus Fairbury Prairie Central on Saturday. In four games last week, he went 8-for-10 with six RBIs, two doubles and a triple.

Lexi Cottingham, Deer Creek-Mackinaw softball

Cottingham homered in two of Dee-Mack's three games last week. The sophomore catcher went deep against Midwest Central/Illini Central on Thursday, then hit her eighth homer of the season on Friday against Princeville. She also was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs against Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley last Monday.

Bryton Short, Metamora boys tennis

The senior capped his Mid-Illini season by not losing a set in every singles and doubles match in Thursday's dual meet against Dunlap. Short also won his 100th career match, becoming the 21st member of the Metamora program to achieve that milestone.

David Russell, Illinois Valley Central boys track & field

Russell was a two-event winner in last Tuesday's Illini Prairie Conference meet. The senior threw a personal-best 62-2.75 feet, winning by almost 16 feet. His throw broke an IVC school record and became the top toss in all of Class 2A this season. The Northern Iowa signee also won the discus in 154-8.25 feet.

Chelsea Wetzel, Dunlap girls track & field

Wetzel set the Peoria area's all-time pole vault record with her leap at last Wednesday's Mid-Illini Conference meet. The junior's vault of 12 feet, 3.75 inches was almost 4 feet higher than the runner-up finisher. This broke the previous record of 12-0 feet held by four athletes including Dunlap's Sydney Bertschy, who added her name to the record in 2017. Wetzel also won the triple jump in 34-7 feet and took second in the long jump (16-8.75). The Eagles won the league title 162-113 over Washington.
