Portsmouth, Middletown high school baseball teams' outcomes decided in the final inning

The Rogers High School baseball team could do no wrong on Saturday as it rolled to a 30-3 win over Hope. While the Vikings were having fun, the Portsmouth and Middletown high school squads each lost its game in the final inning. The Islanders bowed to East Providence on a walk-off single in the eighth inning.

The Portsmouth High girls lacrosse team snapped a four-game losing skid in Division-I with an overtime victory over La Salle as Nora Cooney scored the game-winning goal. The Rogers High boys lacrosse team continued its unbeaten season in Division-IV with an 8-5 triumph over host Scituate on Saturday afternoon.

The Rogers High School baseball team certainly enjoyed its bus ride back from Providence on Saturday afternoon as it defeated Hope 30-3 in a Division-III contest.

On a day when all the Vikings contributed with the bat, Brownell led the way as he went 4-for-6 with two triples, a double, single and seven RBIs. Donahue pitched a five-inning, three-hitter and struck out 11. He also had a double, single, four RBIs and four runs as the Vikings elevated their record to 7-2.

Nora Cooney and Elly Skeels, Portsmouth girls lacrosse

Cooney scored the game-winning, overtime goal off a feed from Margaux Boneau as the Patriots edged La Salle 12-11 on Friday night in Providence. Cooney had two goals and an assist, Skeels contributed two goals and two assists and Sofia Sebolt registered three goals for the Patriots (3-5).

Host East Providence defeated Middletown in walk-off fashion in the eighth inning as a single plated the winning run and the Townies edged the Islanders 4-3 on Saturday. The Islanders tied the game in the sixth inning with three runs, one coming on Knowles’s base hit with the tying run scoring on Garrett West’s single.

Starting hurler Knowles pitched into the eighth inning as he allowed just three hits, two earned runs and struck out nine. Knowles and Agren each had two hits for the Islanders (5-5).

Host Portsmouth came within an out of beating defending state champion North Kingstown before the Skippers rallied for 6-4 win on Friday. Ruggieri pitched into the seventh inning, escaped numerous jams – NK left 12 men on base – and allowed 12 hits and three earned runs. Greenwood keyed the Patriots three-run, sixth-inning rally with a two-run single which gave his team a short-lived 4-3 lead. Portsmouth made five errors and fell to 6-4 in Division-I.

Dylan Walker and Nick Bodycoat, Rogers boys lacrosse

Walker and Bodycoat each scored three goals and Walker added two assists as the visiting Vikings beat Scituate 8-5 on Saturday to stay unbeaten (7-0) in Division-IV.

Jason Hayes, Middletown boys track

The Islanders senior stood out in the throws as he vied in the Classical Classic on Saturday at Providence’s Conley Stadium. Hayes won the discus with a throw of 154 feet, 4 inches and placed second in the shot put (48-11).

Morgan Casey and Emily De Conto, Portsmouth girls track

Reigning state high jump champion Casey won the event and De Conto shined in the hurdles as Portsmouth competed in the Classical Classic on Saturday in Providence.

Casey cleared the high jump bar at 5 feet, 6 inches which was eight inches better than the runner-up. Casey also finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 33 feet, 5 ½ inches. De Conto placed fourth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.73 seconds. Teammate Allie Kaull finished fifth in the 3,000 with a personal-best time of 10 minutes, 45.79 seconds.

Josh Wood, Tiverton boys track

Wood had the best finish among his teammates who competed in the Classical Classic on Saturday in Providence as he placed seventh in the hammer throw with a new school record distance of 176 feet, 4 inches.

Julia Connelly and Laura Hoag, Rogers girls track

Connelly and Hoag came through with the best individual finishes as the Vikings vied in Saturday’s Classical Classic at Conley Stadium in Providence. Connelly placed fifth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 53.38 seconds while Hoag was sixth in the 400 with a time of 1 minute, 3.41 seconds.

Connelly and Hoag also combined with Erica Rodriguez and Kira Parsons as the Vikings 4x400 relay team won the event with a time of 4:29.85.

Aidan Chen and Landon Rodrigues, Portsmouth boys track

Chen and Rodrigues each placed among the top four finishers in two events as Portsmouth competed in Saturday’s Classical Classic at Conley Stadium in Providence.

Chen soared to a personal-best height of 6 feet, 4 inches in placing second in the high jump and he also finished fourth in the 200 with a time of 23.47 seconds. Rodrigues was third in both hurdles events as he covered the 110 distance with a time of 15.88 seconds and the 300 distance with a time of 42.80. Will Kitzmiller came through with a third-place finish in the long jump (19-2).

Neil Porter and Kaden Thomas, Rogers boys track

Porter and Thomas had the top solo event finishes among their teammates who participated in the Classical Classic on Saturday in Providence. Porter finished in fifth place in the javelin throw with a toss of 142 feet, 1 inch. Thomas placed seventh in the discus with a 128-foot throw.
