Waterloo's boys basketball title hopes took a serious shot as Springfield captured a 53-42 victory Tuesday in a Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Scarlet Tier showdown.

Down two at the half, the Tigers (14-4, 11-2) took over with their defense, holding the Vikings (13-5, 10-3) to two third-quarter points as they took the lead for good.

"We've had so many guys out," Springfield coach Jeff Brink said. "We got ravaged by the flu, so we've had guys out for the last two weeks. We haven't had our whole team together. In fact, three of our guys came in today to school, hadn't practiced in the last three days, so to walk out here and get a win, I can't be more proud of our guys."

After the teams combined for 11 3s in the first half, neither hit a single shot from deep after halftime. That was fine for Springfield, which drove relentlessly to the basket, led by powerful finishes from Dylan Sheely (17 points), Sean Guerriero (15) and Carson Cunningham (13).

"We don't have the 30-point guy," Brink said. "We don't have the guys that are going to be first team all-state. Nobody's recruiting my guys to go Division I, but what we got is a bunch of grinders that come to play every night, and they're going to do that."

That included Sheely's three-point play to erase Waterloo's two-point halftime lead and Guerriero's three-point play to push Springfield's advantage to four (36-32). Sheely zipped a pass into a tight window for a Guerriero layup before the third quarter was through with the Tigers ultimately starting the second half on a 14-2 run.

Jackson Eichler led the Vikings with 12 points, as he made 4 of 6 from deep in the first half, but the Tigers did well to limit his opportunities after halftime.

Overall, Waterloo scored just 13 second-half points.

"At their place, we struggled with their physicality, and we knew that was going to be trouble tonight," Vikings coach Jason Wise said. "If we could handle it and get into our sets and get guys open looks, we would be OK."

Waterloo still has a shot at a league title but needs McDonald to beat Springfield Friday. The Vikings also need Lowellville to lose to McDonald or Western Reserve.

Either way, Wise noted there is plenty for his team to play for.

"I told them, I said, 'Hey, you guys are having a heck of a season,'" Wise said. "You're 13-5. You have a chance to win 15, 16, 17 games yet. There's no reason to hang our heads. Yes, maybe we're not going to win the championship. There is still a shot we can win a championship, but we have to rebound and continue to play hard and finish our season going into the tournament."
