Pontiac’s Brummel, Landstrom combine to no-hit Pekin at Dozer Park

PEORIA — Henry Brummel and Zechariah Landstrom combined for a no-hitter as Pontiac recorded a 3-1 victory over Pekin in a nonconference baseball game at Dozer Park. The PTHS seniors combined to strike out 11 and one walk.

Pontiac was able to get on the board first with a three-run first inning. Brummel’s base hit and an error on the play allowed Ryson Eilts to score the game’s first tally. Tommy Oestmann drove in Cayden Masching and Brummel with a one-out single to center to make it 3-0.

The Dragons got on the board in the second thanks to a hit by pitch, and error and passed ball. Brummel plunked three batters to go with his six strikeouts in his three innings on the hill. Landstrom started the fourth inning and walked the second batter he faced. A fielder’s choice followed and then Landstrom retired the final 10 batters he faced to close out the game.

Oestmann had two hits and drove in two runs for Pontiac (8-16). Jackson Crawford also had two hits, including a double, and Brummel had two singles. Eilts had a single.

Streator 7, Pontiac 3: At Pontiac, Streator pushed across four runs in the top of the ninth inning to leave town with an extra-inning nonconference victory at The Ballpark at Williamson Field on Thursday. Mason Schlosser took the loss. He struck out four in 4 2-3 innings of relief. Henry DeYoung started, fanning two in four innings. Ryson Eilts finished up.

Zechariah Landstrom had two hits and drove in a run for Pontiac. Jacob Fogarty also had two hits while Henry Brummel tripled and drove in a run. Tommy Oestmann also recorded a base knock.

Mahomet-Seymour 13, Prairie Central 4: At Mahomet, Prairie Central got on top early but host Mahomet-Seymour answered in running to a nonconference decision on May 6. Friedman and Tredennick had two hits apiece while Collin Hartman had a hit and drove in two runs for the Hawks. JC Spence and Tyler Curl each singled while Brett Holland drove in a run. Hartman (2 Ks) took the loss. Tony Schahrer (K) relieved.

Dunlap 13, Prairie Central 0: At Fairbury, Prairie Central was held in check by Class 3A Dunlap in a nonconference game at PCHS on May 4. The Hawks managed just three hits as Brandon Holland, Brett Holland and Gavin Tredennick each singled. Tredennick took the loss on the bump. Tredennick and first reliever Easton Friedman struck out one each. Luke Ifft finished up.

Dwight 7-2, Marquette 1-11: Dwight got the better of Ottawa (Marquette) in the opener but the host Crusaders bounced back to take the nightcap as the two teams split a Tri-County Conference doubleheader Friday. These were makeup games from earlier in the season. Luke Gallet came up big in the first game with three hits and a run batted in on offense and six punchouts on the bump in picking up the win against the top-ranked Class 1A team. Terry Wilkey got the one batter he faced to end the game. Wilkey’s two hits included a double and he drove in four runs for the Trojans (22-10). Owen Dunlap (RBI) had two hits while Joey Starks doubled and Evan Cox, Tracer Brown (RBI), Ryan Bumpous and Drew Anderson singled.

“We really played a great game today,” Coach Jerry McDowell said. “We Are doing a lot of good things right and anytime you beat a program like Marquette, who came into the game with 22 wins and only 1 loss. Games like this you know, you are moving up to the next level.”

Marquette handled the Trojans in the nightcap by scoring in each of the five innings it batted. Dwight avoided the shutout by scoring twice in the fourth inning on an Evan Sandeno single. Brown had two hits while Sandeno, Gallet, Bumpous and Cox each singled. Starks fanned one in taking the loss. DTHS used four pitchers.

Dwight 7, Beecher 6: At Dwight, Bumpous has been on a roll of late. On Thursday, he delivered the game-winner when his base hit drove in Brown with the winning tally in a one-run win over Beecher at DTHS. The run capped a rally over the final three innings where the Trojans overcame a three-run deficit. Bumpous had two hits and drove in three runs for DTHS. Gallet (RBI) had a double and two singles while Brown doubled and Sandeno and Dunlap each singled.

Dwight 10, Putnam County 3: At Dwight, the Trojans claimed their 20th win of the season in a delayed manner by topping Putnam County in a game that was resumed from an earlier date on Wednesday. Starks picked up the win with four strikeouts before giving way to Statler, who struck out one.

Bumpous smacked a three-run homer to break open the game in the fifth inning. Bumpous also had a single and drove in three runs. Wilkey also homered, singled and drove in three for the Trojans. Cox had two hits while Dunlap, Anderson and Jackson Launius (RBI) singled.

Dwight 8-8, WFC 5-6: Dwight withstood a late rally from Woodland-Flanagan-Cornell in the first game and finished strong in the second contest to sweep a Tri-County Conference home-and-home set on May 6 and May 7. DTHS scored four runs in the third inning to take control of the first game, played at Woodland. Evan Cox had two hits while Bumpous homered for the Trojans. Gallet had a double and Brown (RBI), Dunlap and Sandeno each singled. Statler got the win while Bumpous and Cox did relief work. Each hurler struck out two.

An error with the bases loaded pushed the Trojans to win in the second game, played at DTHS. Bumpous got the win in relief. Gallet started and Wilkey was the first reliever. The trio had two strikeouts apiece. Will Trainor retired the only batter he faced for the save. Dunlap had three hits, including a double, and Wilkey had two safeties and a run batted in. Brown (RBI) had a double and Gallet, Bumpous (RBI), Kyler Starks and Tyler Cox each singled. Sandeno drove in two runs while Anderson plated one.

Dwight 11, Kankakee 7: At Dwight, a pair of five-run innings combined with Starks striking out three as the Trojans claimed a nonconference win over Class 3A Kankakee on May 4. Wilkey and Statler also pitched.

Asher Kargle had three hits and drove in a run to lead the DTHS offense. Gallet had a home run and three RBIs while Wilkey (2 RBIs) and Bumpous (RBI) each doubled. Statler, Brown, Launius (RBI), Cox (RBI) and Dunlap each singled.

Olympia 6, Lexington 1: At Stanford, the Minutemen scored in the top of the first inning but was unable to add any more as host Olympia scored a nonconference win on Wednesday. Starter Canden Hardman took the loss. Jaxson Goodrich and Preston Wiltz also pitched. Blaine Friedmansky tripled while Kayden Knight (RBI), Hardman, Miles Lainhart and Goodrich each singled.

Lexington 4, Eureka 1: At Lexington, Knight fanned six and tossed a four-hitter as Lexington rallied for a Heart of Illinois Conference win on May 6. Hardman came up with the game-winning knock. Jimmy Smith had three hits and Drake Powell collected two hits for the Minutemen. Knight and Hayden Sennett (2 RBIs) each doubled and Joe Steffen singled.

Lexington 10, Heyworth 9: At Lexington, the Minutemen lost their lead in the top of the sixth inning but got it back in the bottom frame for an HOIC win on May 4. Powell got the win in relief of starter Friedmansky (2 Ks). Knight earned the save.

Lainhart, who had three hits and three RBIs, drove in Powell with the winning run. Friedmansky had a double and single, Sennett had a double and single while Wiltz (2 RBIs) also had two hits. Knight had a double and drove in three runs while Powell, Hardman (2 RBIs) and Goodrich (RBI) each singled.

EPG 10, Mt. Pulaski 5: At Mt. Pulaski, El Paso-Gridley scored in six of the seven innings en route to a nonconference win over host Mt. Pulaski on Thursday. This included a pair of two-run insurance frames at the end to move the Titans to 12-10. Joah Knapp had a double and drove in two runs while Mason Vandegraft and Camden Bressner had two hits and one RBI apiece. Ryan Kelsey, Eli Miller, Dominic Ricconi and Brady Veselack (RBI) each singled.

Veselack and Owen Adams benefitted from the offense as the two combined on a five-hitter. Veselack got the win with five strikeouts. Adams got the save.

EPG 9, Roanoke-Benson 7: At Roanoke, Camden Bressner drove in the game-winner and Veselack had three hits as the Titans scored a nonconference road win on May 7. Veselack had a double and two singles to go with two runs batted in for EPG. Mitchell Wilson had a double, single and two RBIs. Knapp (RBI) and Ricconi had two hits apiece. Bressner (2 RBIs), Miller (2 RBIs), Adams and Vandegraft each singled. Adams (2 Ks) got the win in relief of Vandegraft (7 Ks).

Farmington 5, EPG 2: At El Paso, the Titans scored twice in the first inning, but Farmington rallied late for a nonconference win at South Pointe Park on May 6. Wilson struck out seven in taking the loss. Veselack fanned one in relief. Vandegraft had a hit and drove in a run while Kelsey also singled.

Henry-Senachwine 5, EPG 2: At Henry, EPG took the lead in the top of the sixth inning but lost it in the bottom of the frame in falling to host Henry-Senachwine on May 4. Adams (K) took the loss in relief. Veselack (2 Ks) started. Bressner had two hits to lead the offense. Veselack had a hit and run batted in while Ricconi, Kelsey and Lucas Shaffer had one hit apiece.
