Poll: Vote for the Journal's May 8-14 Athletes of the Week
There were several outstanding performances last week as the regular season wound down and, as such, we’ve got another packed list of nominees.
Last week’s winners were girls lacrosse standouts Jadyn Jones and Taryn Satkowski. Jones, a Roosevelt goalkeeper, had 11,227 votes to win the large-schools poll. Satkowski, a budding freshman star for Our Lady of Lourdes, received 8,576 votes to take the small-schools poll.
Voting will be open until 6 p.m. Thursday. This week’s nominees:
Large-school nominees
Paige Hotle, Ketcham softball
The catcher went 4 for 5 with three RBI and helped guide her pitcher through a complete game, despite dealing with an injured right hand, leading Ketcham in a 10-4 win over rival John Jay-East Fishkill last week.
Alyssa Liguori, Arlington softball
She pitched to a 1.33 ERA with 37 strikeouts over three complete games last week, helping the Admirals go 2-1. Arlington is expected to be among the top seeds in the Section 1 Class AA playoffs.

Mikey Fontaine, Beacon baseball
He went 3 for 4 with three RBI, including a two-out, two-run inside-the-park homer that tied it in the seventh inning before the Bulldogs went on to win in the eighth. Fontaine also pitched three innings in relief to earn the win.
Andrew Farina, John Jay-East Fishkill baseball
He hit a three-run triple, helping the Patriots beat Fox Lane, 10-8, last week during their Strike Out Cancer fundraiser game. John Jay raised more than $10,000 for the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund, which helps the families of children battling pediatric cancer.
Caelyn Deserre, Arlington golf
The eighth-grader shot a 1-over 35 at Sedgewood Golf Club in Carmel to conclude the regular season. She advanced to compete in the Section 1 championship tournament, beginning Thursday.
Jess Feerick, Roosevelt softball
The senior went 4 for 6 with five RBI, including a grand slam, for the Presidents in a win over Saugerties. In the performance, the St. Thomas Aquinas commit surpassed 100 career RBI.
Kate Amaral, Roosevelt girls lacrosse
The senior had three goals, an assist, nine groundballs and seven draw controls, leading the Presidents in a 9-8 win over Red Hook. Despite Roosevelt playing man-down in the final 7:29, Amaral scored twice to secure the win.
Owen Paino, Ketcham baseball
He pitched six shutout innings with nine strikeouts and drove in a run as Ketcham topped John Jay-East Fishkill, 2-0, securing a league title and clinching the No. 1 seed entering the Section 1 Class AA playoffs.
Corey Martin, Poughkeepsie baseball
The junior pitched a two-hitter with a career-high 19 strikeouts for the Pioneers in an 8-1 win over East Ramapo, capturing the Hudson Valley Baseball championship for a second straight year.
Eric Santaella, Arlington baseball
He went 5 for 5 with three RBI and four runs for the Admirals in a 14-6 win over Mahopac last Wednesday.
Nicolette Diedrich, Wappingers girls lacrosse
The senior scored three goals, including the 200th of her career, during a win over Carmel last week. The Wingate University commit reached that milestone in 43 games.
Small-school nominees
Drew Cornax, Lourdes boys lacrosse
The junior scored a career-high nine goals and dished three assists, leading the Warriors in an 18-11 win over New Paltz last Friday. He also had four goals and three assists in a win over Saugerties.
Leah Gunsett, Marlboro softball
She struck out five in a complete game and went 3 for 4, leading the Iron Dukes in an 11-4 win over Pine Plains to capture the Mid-Hudson Athletic League title last Saturday. The junior also pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts in their 5-1 win over Roosevelt in the tournament semifinals.
Alexa Fernandes, Spackenkill softball
She went 3 for 3 with six RBI and four runs for Spackenkill's win over Webutuck.
Jose Iraola-Ceely, Marlboro track & field
The senior took first in the hammer throw (161 feet, 10 inches) and the shot put (45-4) and placed third in the discus (136-10) at the Middletown Invitational.
Lily Fanea, Pine Plains softball
She went 2 for 4 with two doubles and three RBI for the Bombers in a 5-3 win over Class B contender Highland. She also was 3 for 3 with two RBI in a 4-3 loss to Class B regional champ Marlboro.
Sean Cleary, Lourdes baseball
He threw a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts for the Warriors in a 5-1 win over Rondout Valley.
John Ryder, Marlboro baseball
He fanned eight and drove in three runs, leading the Iron Dukes in a 6-3 win over Rondout Valley.
Ian Warren, Highland baseball
He went 3 for 3 with a homer and four RBI, leading the Huskies in a 13-7 win over Red Hook last Friday. He also drove in three runs in a win over Pine Plains.
Landon Zehr, Highland boys lacrosse
The goalie made 12 saves in the Huskies' 11-3 win over Saugerties, blanking them in the second half. He also surpassed 500 career saves.
David Torrance, Dover baseball
He was 4 for 4 with six RBI, including a three-run homer, for Dover in a win over Ellenville.
Linus Oudom, Spackenkill baseball
The sophomore allowed two hits and struck out 13 in six innings in Spackenkill's win over Webutuck. Oudom also was 2 for 3 with two runs.
Josie O'Leary, Pawling softball
She went 4 for 5 with four stolen bases in a win over Croton Harmon last Wednesday, and was 3 for 4 in a win over Brewster.
