Playoff season is here and the Providence Journal has you covered with scores and recaps

BOYS TENNIS

Division I Quarterfinals

No. 2 La Salle 4, No. 7 St. Ponaganset 1

The Rams’ doubles dominated and the back end of singles did the same, earning them a semifinal spot with a 4-1 win over the Chieftains.

With six first- and second-team All-Staters playing in the top three singles matches, La Salle took advantage everywhere else.

It started in doubles, with a 6-0, 6-0 win from the No. 1 team of Yash Choudhary and Max Wallace and soon followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win by the No. 2 team of Callum Bixby and Luke Cavanagh.

In singles, La Salle No. 4 Zach Perullo earned a 6-2, 6-2 win. St. Ponaganset – a co-op of St. Raphael and Ponaganset – earned a point at No. 2 when Ethan Clegg came up with a 6-1, 7-5 win, but the Rams soon closed out the match when Joe Cavanagh won at No. 3, 6-2, 6-2.

The loss ends the season for St. Raphael. La Salle moves on to the semifinals and will play the winner of Thursday’s match between No. 3 Lincoln and No. 6 Mount St. Charles.

Division III Quarterfinals

No. 2 Cranston East 4, No. 7 Scituate 0

The Thunderbolts were up 1-0 before the match started and took care of business with three wins at singles in a 4-0 victory over the Spartans.

Scituate didn’t have enough players to field a third doubles team, giving Cranston East’s Danny Song and Johan Nawrocki a win and the team a 1-0 lead.

The singles made sure there was no drama. Cranston East No. 1 Eston Fowler and No. 4 Adrian Rosales-Lopez were perfect in their matches, both winning by 6-0, 6-0 scores. No. 2 Eri Ogunde was just as good, coming away with a 6-0, 6-1 win to clinch the team match.

Cranston East moves on to the semifinals, where they’ll host the winner of Thursday’s match between No. 6 Warwick and No. 3 Burrillville.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Division III Quarterfinals

Morgan Monaco, Mount St. Charles girls lacrosse

No. 4 Mount St. Charles 21, No. 5 Ponaganset 7

Up five at halftime, the Mounties dominated the second half with defense and an offense that never stopped in a 21-7 win over the Chieftains.

Mount St. Charles offense put up double figures in the first half and while it had a comfortable 10-5 lead on Ponaganset, it wasn’t completely comfortable.

That changed quickly in the second half as the Mounties continued to score but limited the Chieftains to just two second-half goals.

Brynn Link did most of the damage for Mount, scoring seven goals. Morgan Monaco came through with three and Maddie Berard and Charley White both came up with three. Jaina Yekelchik led Ponaganset with three goals. Katie Papa and Lana Hess both had two in the loss.

Mount, the defending D-IV champs, will now have a chance to earn a spot in the D-III title game and will play top-seeded Westerly in the semifinals Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

BASEBALL

Division III

Rogers 10, Classical 0

The Vikings wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, scoring a pair of runs in the first and crossing the plate at least once in every other inning to salt this one away inside of 5 innings. Ben Bourgueta led the way, going 2-3 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Trenton Carter was 2-3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored and Conor Donahue and Matthew Lynch also each drove in a pair. Robert Dufault threw all 5 innings and struck out 5 in the win. For the Purple, Dominic MazzaTyler Lee and Owen Ninneman each had a hit in the loss.

Kayden Artruc and Dylan Nickerson had two RBI apiece and the Northmen got solid pitching from starter Ray Reall (4 inn., 0 ER, 7 Ks) and Nickerson (3 inn., 1 ER, 5 Ks) as NS rolled to victory over the Pride.

SOFTBALL

Division I

Sophia Parrillo, Smithfield softball

Smithfield 9, Moses Brown 5

Freshman Madeline Bose drove in the run that gave the Sentinels their first lead and later hit an inside-the-park home run that put an exclamation point on their 9-5 win over the Quakers.

Down two heading into the bottom of the third, Smithfield tied the game when Ava Lopez scored on a passed ball and Crystal Cacador scored from third on a dropped third strike. After Sophia Parrillo took second on a wild pitch, Bose roped a line drive to right to give the Sentinels a 3-2 lead.

Bose was hardly finished. She led off the fifth inning with a walk, stole second, took third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout by Ella Handwerger that put Smithfield up 6-3.

In the top of the sixth, Moses Brown cut the deficit to one on an error that let Abbie DeWolf score and Coco Medeiros reach, with Medeiros later scoring on a wild pitch.

Smithfield answered in the bottom half with three runs thanks to two RBI groundouts and Bose’s inside the park home run.

Bose finished the game 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs. Lopez was 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI in the win.

Anna Costello led the way for Moses Brown, going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, both coming on a first-inning home run.

Smithfield finished 6-12 in the regular season with the win and will await its postseason matchup. Moses Brown went 5-13 and is also qualified for the playoffs.

Division II

Mariah Fleury, Johnston softball

Johnston 8, South Kingstown 3

After getting a wakeup call in the first inning, the Panthers came together and took control, picking up an 8-3 win over the Rebels and earning the No. 1 seed for the Division II playoffs.

Playing a South Kingstown team that needed to win to earn a postseason spot, Johnston found itself down 1-0 in the first inning after an error allowed a run to score.

The Panthers didn’t waste time in getting the run back. Mariah Fleury led the second inning off with a single, took second on an error and third on a passed ball, then scored on a groundout by Layla Bryand.

An RBI single by Madison Campano and a bases-loaded walk to Fleury put Johnston up 3-1 after three. Campano drove home another run in the fourth and in the fifth, the Panthers put the game away with four runs. Bella Boudreau and Kalyn Foster had the big hits with back-to-back two-run doubles.

With the win Johnston finishes 12-2 and tied for first with Ponaganset and Westerly. With last week’s wins over the Chieftains and Bulldogs, the Panthers earn the No. 1 seed in the D-II playoffs.

The loss puts Toll Gate at 5-9 in the regular season, leaving the Titans one game short of reaching the minimum six wins needed for a postseason spot.

Scituate 4, Toll Gate 1

Kate Nickerson threw a one-hitter and struck out 14 and also sparked the offense in the Spartans’ 4-1 win over the Titans.

Nickerson got things going for Scituate’s offense in the first with a one-out single and after taking second on a Victoria Geisser hit, she stole third and then scored on an error. In the third, she walked, stole second, stole third and scored on a passed ball.

Toll Gate grabbed a run in the bottom of the third on an error, but once again Nickerson got herself around the bases. She drew a one-out walk and eventually scored on a bases-loaded walk to put the Spartans up 3-1.

It was all Nickerson needed. The senior dominated in the circle and while the Scituate defense struggled – five errors as a team – Nickerson allowed just one hit the entire game and didn’t walk a batter.

Scituate wraps up the regular season with a 10-4 record, putting it in a four-way tie with LNP, Portsmouth and West Warwick for fourth place. The Spartans’ 2-1 record against the three teams ties them with Portsmouth in pool play and with Scituate’s win over the Patriots, should earn them the No. 4 seed.

With the loss, Toll Gate finishes the season at 5-9 and miss the playoffs by a game.

LNP 10, Woonsocket 2

Mariana Xavier got the Wildcats’ offense off to the start they were looking for and four runs in the fifth help put the game away in a 10-2 win over the Villa Novans.

LNP was threatening in the first when Xavier made good on it, ripping a triple that scored Lauren Cipriano and Charlotte Laboissiere.

Up 3-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth, the Wildcats gave themselves all the breathing room they’d need. Riddhi Mistry drove one in with a sneaky bunt single and later Mistry and Brielle Lambert scored on an error. Madilyn Sheehan scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch for a 7-1 lead.

Freshman Anna Danis made sure Woonsocket didn’t get closer. She threw a complete game, spread out seven hits and gave up one earned run while striking out five.

With the win, LNP finishes the season 10-4, tied for fourth place with Portsmouth, Scituate and West Warwick.

Scituate and Portsmouth finished with the best records in pool play among the teams at 2-1 and because the Spartans beat the Patriots, they earn the No. 4 seed. Portsmouth has wins over West Warwick and LNP, so it becomes the No. 5 seed and West Warwick’s win over the Wildcats means they should be the No. 7 seed for the D-II playoffs.

Woonsocket finishes the season 4-10.
