Pistons’ Jalen Duren makes some history with monster night on the boards

Jalen Duren made some history on Wednesday with a monster night on the glass on Wednesday to help the Detroit Pistons knock off the Charlotte Hornets on the road.

Duren recorded seven points, a career-high 19 rebounds, three blocked shots and two assists in the 141-134 win in overtime. He hauled in six offensive rebounds and finished the contest by shooting 2-of-8 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.

He became the second-youngest player in history to record 19 rebounds in a single game at 19 years, 26 days. He is one of 16 players in the league this season to finish with 19 rebounds.

“I can’t say enough about Jalen Duren: 19 rebounds,” Pistons coach Dwane Casey said. “(That is) big time for a rookie to come in and get that many rebounds and dominate the boards like that.”

Duren is now averaging 6.6 points and 7.7 rebounds on 59.8% shooting from the field in 27 games. He led the Pistons in rebounding for a team-high 15th time this season and has recorded at least 12 rebounds in each of his last four games.

He also improved his standing among his peers with his performance.

The 13th pick is 30th in the league among all players in total rebounds and is tied for ninth in offensive rebounds (82) and 13th in offensive rebounding percentage (12.2). Of course, he leads all first-year players in each category and has a sizable lead over the rookie class.

Duren, at 6 feet, 11 inches and 250 pounds, is regarded as one of the most athletic big men in the NBA and has been a force inside the paint in a limited role off the bench. He has seemingly endless energy and often presents matchup problems for teams.

He is one of the most productive rookies this season and is doing so on an average of 22.5 minutes per game. Duren seems poised to have quite a rookie season if he can keep up that production with the Pistons.
