Pinnacle, Desert Vista, Desert Mountain, Millennium take state swimming titles

The Arizona Interscholastic Association's state high school swim and dive championships were held Friday and Saturday. Here's an overview of the results.

D-I: Pinnacle, Desert Vista take team titles

Pinnacle High School, which won both the 200 and 400 freestyle relay, captured the Division I boys state championship to edge out defending team champion Chaparral, 309-304. Chaparral was runner-up in both of those relays.

Pinnacle's 400-yard free relay team included Jeremy Rosen, Eduardo Flynn, Lewis Esterly and Orion Dietz.

Chaparral boys set a state record in the 200-yard medley relay in 1 minute, 30.66 seconds. The relay team was comprised of Ethan Mindlin, Hudson Schuricht, Ethan Reniewicki and Seth Crow. They won the title by five seconds over runner-up Casteel (1:35.41).

Schuricht also won the 200 individual medley in 1:49.87 and set a state record in the 100 breaststroke in 54.51. Crow won the gold medal in the 50 freestyle in 20.00, just short of becoming the third swimmer in Arizona high school history to break 20 seconds. Crow also won the 100 free in 45.16.

Casteel senior August Vetsch was a double champion in the 100 butterfly (47.22) and the 200 freestyle (1:38.53).

In the girls' competition, Anthem Boulder Creek freshman Delaney Barbee helped her team win the 200 medley relay and she captured the state title in the 100 freestyle in 50.78 seconds, edging out Desert Vista senior Clare Luken (51.46).

Luken helped Desert Vista capture the girls' team state championship. She won the 200 freestyle in 1:51.05.

Gilbert junior Lorin Tobler won the girls' 100 butterfly in 54.50, edging out defending state champion Sophia Jahn of Red Mountain (54.96). Jahn won the 50 freestyle in 23.36. Tobler also won the 100 backstroke in 55.56.

D-II: Desert Mountain, Millennium win team

The Scottsdale Desert Mountain girls swim team edged out Tucson Catalina Foothills in a tight competition to win this year's Division II team championship, by a 365-312 team score. This was Desert Mountain's fourth consecutive title.

Campo Verde (231), Canyon Del Oro (218) and Millennium (180.5) rounded out the top five.

The Wolves took the 200-yard medley relay and won six of the meet's final 10 races to secure the title. Desert Mountain's Ellie Horning, Gabrielle Primiano, Emmy Therrien and Juliette Daignault who turned in a time of 1:44.20 in the first relay. Primiano also took first in the 200-yard Individual Medley and 100-yard breaststroke.

Therrien won the 100-yard butterfly and the 500-yard Freestyle in 4:58.20. Daignault won the 200-yard freestyle.

On the boys' side, Goodyear Millennium took the team title in a runaway, with 439 points to take its second consecutive team title. The Tigers were followed by Canyon Del Oro with 270 team points, and Desert Mountain with 265.

Millennium won eight finals, individual and relay events combined. Bartek Bednarz, Landon Suaverdez, Marcos Bravo, Cole Faut, and Kartsen Eichler were among Millennium swimmers who won relay or individual events.

Chandler's Arizona College Prep dominated both the boys and girls swim tournament, which was held at Phoenix Country Day School on Saturday.

In addition, Phoenix Country Day swimming won this season's small-school team tournament held last month.
