PIAA track and field preview: District 10 athletes favored in seven events at Shippensburg

Reed Yost won the Class 2A boys pole vault during last weekend’s District 10 track and field meet with a good-but-not-great height of 14 feet, 6 inches.

The Seneca senior regarded it that way because his personal best is 15-6.

Which is why, when the seeds were posted for the PIAA meet, Yost didn’t initially check the top of the psych sheet for his event. Only after further scanning did his name finally appear.

It topped a field of 18.

Yost was shocked about his top-seeded status for Saturday’s competition at Shippensburg University.

Pleasantly shocked, but definitely shocked.

“I know some of the other 2A guys there who are pretty good (vaulters),” Yost said. “I thought they’d have some better (heights) too. But I’ve (cleared) 15-6, so I feel comfortable knowing I can do that.”

Yost is one of six northwestern Pennsylvania individuals who are gold medal favorites for the two-day meet, which begins Friday at 9 a.m. Two others are North East senior Noah Crozier in the 2A boys high jump (6-7) and freshman Abby Malesiewski in the 2A girls 100 hurdles (14.83 seconds).

That district total doesn’t include Mercyhurst Prep in the 2A boys 400-meter relay. The Lakers’ Vincent Feliciano, Jacob Applebee, Ja’son Ellman and anchor Camden Bryant, at 41.91, are the only quartet with a seed time below 42 seconds.

The top eight athletes in each event will receive PIAA medals. While Yost only meant the pole vault, he likely spoke for all those who seek them.

“I’m going to have a lot of great competition,” he said. “I know I’m going to have to perform at my best.”

Here are other district athletes, in alphabetical order, to consider this weekend:

Class 2A girls

Ella Corritore, sr., and Hailey Corritore, sr., Fort LeBoeuf: The sisters helped the Bison repeat as the district’s small-school team titlists last weekend at Slippery Rock.

Ella Corritore’s highest individual seed this weekend is sixth for the 100 hurdles (15.28). Hailey Corritore is projected to medal in the triple jump (seventh at 36-10½).

Maggie Goodlin, jr., Greenville: Her district-winning distance of 44-4½ left her a sizeable favorite for the shot put. Richland senior Sasha Garnett is seeded second at 42-9½.

Kyndra Seddon, jr., Lakeview: Although favored to win the discus (128-11), she’s also one of four district throwers who have single-digit seeds.

Corry junior Lindsey Hasbrouck is listed third (121-0), Sharon sophomore Victorya Byler sixth (116-3) and North East senior Tessa Bemiss eighth (115-1).

Milena Sciullo, so., Grove City: The field star for the Eagles qualified in three events, none more prominently than the triple jump. She’s favored for first with a seed distance of 39-3.

Class 2A boys

Camden Bryant, sr., and Ja’son Ellman, sr., Mercyhurst Prep: Individual second seeds compliment their legs with Mercyhurst’s first-seeded 400 relay.

Bryant, bound for Slippery Rock University’s track and field program, qualified for the 100 at 10.81. Neighborhood Academy’s DeJaun Croumbles is the favorite at 10.73. Ellman landed at 24-½ on his district-winning long jump. He’s essentially tied with Conwell-Egan’s Anthony Conrey for the top seed.

Conrey is listed first because his distance was attained on an earlier attempt.

Ethen Knox, sr., Oil City: One of the great athletes in the district’s recent history qualified in three individual events. His highest seeded is 10th for the discus (147-5).

Levi Prementine, sr., Slippery Rock: The state’s reigning gold medalist in the long jump is seeded fifth (22-6½) in his bid to repeat.

Prementine also will start third for the 110 and 300 hurdles.

Megan Puleio, so., Meadville: She has the highest seed for any of the district’s large-school females, which is 10th for the 800 (2:13.11).

Lauren Raimy, sr., Cathedral Prep: The Fordham University recruit, at 5:03.41, set the district record for the 1,600. She’ll start 17th during Friday’s only medal event for track.

Joslyn Schnell, sr., McDowell: She’s listed in the long jump (17-2) and triple jump (34-6½) field thanks to district-winning performances for those events.

Rylan Dye, sr., Hickory: As the fifth-seeded high jumper (6-5), he has the chance to be the latest Hornet who medals at or near the top of a PIAA field event.

Cooper Robson, sr., General McLane: None of the district’s large-school male athletes has a higher seed than the fourth-year Lancer.

Robson, at 6-5, is projected to be the bronze medalist for the high jump.

Jonah Stucchio, so., Grove City: He has a single-digit seed (ninth at 45-5½) for the triple jump.

Leonardo and Benny Whitaker, McDowell
