Broken trophies in sports
The Edmonton Eskimos broke the top of the Grey Cup right off when it was dropped during the celebration. The Eskimos have a rough history with the cup, damaging it again in 1978 and 1993.

As he delivered his acceptance speech after winning his second Norris Trophy as the league's top defenseman, Chris Chelios noticed the top of the trophy had fallen off mid-speech.
When IndyCar driver Sebastien Bourdais's second-place trophy at the Honda Indy in Toronto <a href="http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/news/canadian-press-newsalert-dixon-wins-first-two-toronto-212319852.html" target="_blank">fell off the podium and shattered</a>, he joined a nefarious list of athletes who have accidentally wrecked their prize.
