Phoenix Suns taking precautions with guard Jordan Goodwin (left knee soreness)

LAS VEGAS – Phoenix Suns guard Jordan Goodwin was looking to take in the festivities Sunday at NBA Con Fan Events at Mandalay Bay Convention Center.

“I don’t know what’s going on, I haven’t walked around yet, but it’s interesting,” Goodwin said. “It’s got my attention. I’m going to shoot on that 20-foot basket a couple of times and see if I can make it.”

Nothing too serious.

After all, he was sporting a sleeve on his left knee after experiencing soreness in Saturday’s NBA Summer League game the Suns lost to the Milwaukee Bucks, 84-75, at Cox Pavilion.

“I took a hit late in the second quarter, but I feel pretty good (Sunday),” Goodwin said. “Nothing too crazy. Just being cautious with it.”

Suns assistant Quinton Crawford wasn’t sure whether Crawford will play in Monday’s game against Miami Heat at Thomas & Mack Center.

“I've got to get with the training staff,” said Goodwin, who is working as the Suns summer league head coach. “They said the knee is sore, but it reacted well overnight. So, we'll see where he's at."

The Suns practiced Sunday at the convention center as fans were able to watch the last 20 minutes or so of it.

“This is nice,” Goodwin said. “This is very reminiscent for me of NBA All-Star game growing up, the jam session. There’s courts, there’s games, it’s good for families to bring their kids. It’s actually a good opportunity for their kids to see NBA players. I like it.”

Goodwin looks to find a role at point guard, a position the Suns lack depth. Devin Booker will likely take on the lead guard role and Cameron Payne is the only true point guard on the current roster.

“I’ve played point guard almost my whole life, especially in college at St. Louis,” said Goodwin, who averaged just 2.7 assists last season playing an average of 18.7 minutes over the course of 62 games with Washington.

“My two years with the Wizards, I was the point guard. I’m still getting better with the transition. Just being more comfortable with the ball in my hands. Getting used to making the right plays.”

Goodwin was part of the blockbuster Bradley Beal trade that sent Chris Paul and Landry Shamet to the Wizards. With Goodwin being on the standard roster, the Suns could take precautions and not play him the remainder of the summer league.

If Goodwin doesn’t play Monday, that’ll free up opportunities for players like Grant Sherfield to see more minutes.

“Whenever somebody goes down, you’ve just got to be ready when your number is called,” said Sherfield, who had 11 points and six assists to just one turnover off the bench Saturday. “I feel like I’m ready. I’m excited to play. The summer league is a great event. I’m just happy to be able to play.”

Goodwin would certainly be missed for the Suns summer league team.

Running the show, Goodwin had four assists and zero turnovers in 18 minutes of action Saturday.

“He’s a really important piece for our team, especially this summer league team,” Suns second-round pick Toumani Camara said. “He plays both ends of the court and plays with a lot of energy and he’s our leader. One of the more experienced guys on our team.”

Still, safety first.

“Got to be cautious, but I love to play basketball,” Goodwin said. “Definitely got to be cautious with it. Only get one body. So I’m looking to take my time and make the right decision.”
