Petoskey boys win fourth straight; Alanson wins by 94, Silveus gets 1000th point

TRAVERSE CITY — When a team gets hot, it’s usually pretty noticeable out on the court.

And the Petoskey boys’ basketball team is offering up some evidence of just how much they’re clicking at the moment.

After falling to Traverse City Central by nine earlier this season, the Northmen hit the road Friday to meet up once again for a Big North Conference tilt, only this time they returned home with a 22-point victory.

Behind another standout game from Jimmy Marshall, Petoskey picked up a fourth straight win in a 68-46 victory over the Trojans.

“Nice team win,” Petoskey coach Matt Tamm said. “We had balanced scoring, as eight players scored. Most importantly, we played lockdown defense. Brandon Klingelsmith and Haden Janes did not give Owen Ribel space to operate and all the players were anticipating and not allowing Traverse City to get any easy scores.”

Another big night from Petoskey's Jimmy Marshall helped the Northmen earn a fourth straight win and avenge a previous loss to Traverse City Central.

Petoskey got off to a hot start against the Trojans, nailing six first half 3-pointers behind four different players.

Marshall led in the game with 26 points, five assists, four steals and four rebounds.

Mason Fralick also came off the bench and provided a spark with 13 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter to help preserve the win.

Brady Odenbach also had seven and Lucas O’Donnell and Klingelsmith each had six.

Petoskey (9-6, 4-3 BNC) will get ready for a three-game week ahead now, with a Tuesday, Feb. 6 matchup at home against Sault Ste. Marie up first.

Cadillac will also visit on Thursday, Feb. 8 and Ludington heads to town on Saturday, Feb. 10.

Alanson 101, Alba 7

ALANSON — Christian Silveus hit the 1,000 point milestone for his career with the Alanson boys’ basketball team on Friday when the Vikings earned a 101-7 victory over Alba.

Silveus finished the night with 27 points, six rebounds and six steals.

“I could say 1000 great things about Christian since I first started coaching him in middle school,” Alanson coach Brian Kujawa said. “You have to put in the work to eclipse that mark and those points do all the talking that is needed.”

Preston Nelson added 20 points, 10 rebounds and five steals for Alanson, Corbin Cousineau had 14 points, Matthew Peters had 11 points, seven assists and five steals and Cameron Boda scored 10 and had 12 rebounds.

Alanson (10-4, 5-2 NLC) next travels to Boyne Falls on Monday, Feb. 5, then to Ellsworth on Friday, Feb. 9.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Mount Pleasant 54, Petoskey 29

PETOSKEY — With all the injuries the Petoskey girls’ basketball team has had to deal with this season, a couple more recently added to bad timing during a current losing streak.

On Saturday, the streak for Petoskey grew to six straight as they dropped a 54-29 final against Mount Pleasant at home.

Petoskey was missing both Caitlyn Matelski and Nevaeh Leonard in the game still.

Braylin Adair finished with nine points and eight rebounds, Haidyn Wegmann had five and three assists and Lauren LaHaie and Sadie Corey each scored six.

Petoskey (8-9) will try to snap the losing streak when they meet Cadillac at home on Friday, Feb. 9.

It took Stefi Reskevics and the whole rest of the Harbor Springs lineup for the Rams to pull out an LMC win Friday night at home.

Harbor Springs 65, Grayling 63

HARBOR SPRINGS — It took a little extra than planned Friday night to come away with a victory, though a 65-63 win over Grayling for the Harbor Springs girls’ basketball team was still a win in the end.

The Rams got some balanced scoring around the lineup, as a number of young players continued to step up.

Olivia Flynn led with 24 points, Sophie Barnadyn scored 15, Bryleigh Rummer and Paige Keiser each scored 10 and Stefi Reskevics had six.

Harbor Springs (12-2, 8-1) kept pace in the LMC race with the win and next visits East Jordan on Tuesday, Feb. 6.

Elk Rapids 62, East Jordan 30

ELK RAPIDS — It was a tough Friday night for the East Jordan girls’ basketball team as they met up with Elk Rapids and fell in a 62-30 final on the road.

June Kirkpatrick led EJ with 17 points in the low scoring night.

“We are just devastated with sickness and playing three games in four nights caught up with us against a very good team,” EJ coach Tim Smith said.

East Jordan (7-6, 2-5) next brings in Harbor Springs on Tuesday, Feb. 6.
