One of the worst kept secrets in the Panhandle no longer qualifies as a secret. It's now official news.

The Gruver Greyhounds have announced their new Athletic Director and head football coach in Kurt Haberthur. Haberthur comes over from Perryton, where he's spent the past three seasons as the head football coach and AD.

The move has been expected since last week when Haberthur's wife Delma was hired as the new principal at Gruver. Haberthur has previously served as the head coach at Sunray from 2011-17 and has served in an assistant role at Perryton, Pampa, Sunray, Randall and Amarillo High over the course of his career.

Haberthur replaces Lee Brandon, who resigned his position earlier this month.

Perryton, meanwhile, will officially announce Haberthur's replacement next week. Sources tell the Amarillo Globe-News it will be an internal promotion.

Haberthur's move is just the latest in one of the busiest coaching carousels in Panhandle history. He wasn't even the first new hire of the week as West Texas Stinnett made its new AD/football coach announcement on Tuesday. The Comanches will be bringing in Jeff Smith, who has been the head coach at Hale Center since 2019. A graduate of Dalhart, Smith previously coached baseball at WT from 2014-2017.

Another move in football came in the six-man area. Follett has hired 23-year old Jon Anderson as head coach. Formerly of Sanderson, this will be his first head coaching position. Former head coach Kyle Timmons was reassigned and accepted an assistant coaching position with Happy on Thursday.

One more football coaching position has come off the board in Boys Ranch. Lubbock Coronado assistant coach Louis Kelley will be the new head coach for the RoughRiders. He was the running backs coach at Coronado. He replaces Aaron Wampler, who departed for the football coach/AD position at Clarendon earlier this year.

The most anticipated hiring in the area remains Randall High. After Gaylon Selman announced his retirement earlier this month, much speculation began to ramp up around the position. CISD Athletic Director Toby Tucker announced Thursday evening that the district will introduce the new head coach on Monday at noon.

There are now two football head coaching/AD positions open in the Panhandle: Booker and Bovina. Booker head coach Nic Williams and the school mutually agreed to part ways earlier this week while Bovina head coach Coby Emery announced Friday that he'd be returning to Floydada after his wife was hired as the principal.

All of that is just on the football side of things. A number of basketball coaching positions came open this week as well.

Dumas boys coach Jordan Windholz will be heading to Levelland, filling the same position. That position is now open. Childress High School is searching for a new girls coach after Shannon Fisher announced he was leaving to take a middle school principal job at Wellington on Friday.

Finally, Hereford announced that it is seeking a new head coach for the golf program. This is in addition to open positions for boys basketball at Borger and Perryton. Bushland is still seeking a new head baseball coach and presumably a new softball coach as well.
