Perfect 10: Indiana Classic gives local bowling fans reason to cheer
Feb. 24—An energized crowd cheering every strike thrown by some of the world's best bowlers during a national broadcast was a fitting climax to a memorable week at Championship Lanes, according to the hosts of the PBA Indiana Classic.
"They know we're going to take good care of them," said Dave Small, proprietor at Championship Lanes. "This is their first visit here as far as this level goes, but I think we've made a nice impression."
Saturday night's Indiana Classic finals, which were broadcast live on FS1, drew nearly 400 fans to the bowling center on the city's south side. Many of them carried handmade signs supporting the five finalists, and the bowlers said the energy in the building was tangible.
"The fans have been piled in here day and night for all the (qualifying rounds)," said Kyle Troup, who was seeded third in the finals' stepladder format. Troup knocked off Zach Wilkins of Canada and Marshall Kent of Washington before upsetting Indiana native E.J. Tackett in the championship match.
"The staff has done an amazing job," added Troup, who won his 13th career PBA title. "I love the fans, and I'm excited to be here."
