These Peoria-area teams are ranked in the first statewide high school basketball polls

The first high school basketball polls for the 2023-24 season were released by The Associated Press on Wednesday afternoon, ranking the Peoria High girls as the top team in Class 3A.

The No. 1 Lions received three first-place votes, being one point ahead of last season's state runner-up and second-ranked Lincoln. Galesburg comes in at No. 3, while Morton is sixth and Washington is No. 9.

Other ranked boys teams

On the boys side, Manual is ranked No. 3 among Class 2A teams. The Rams received a pair of first-place votes, while Fieldcrest is fifth and Peoria Notre Dame is ranked No. 7. Taylor Ridge Rockridge is the top-ranked team in 2A. Macomb and El Paso-Gridley are among the teams receiving votes.

Richwoods is the fourth-rated team in Class 3A with Morton, which beat reigning state champion Metamora this past Friday, at No. 10. The Redbirds received votes.

Illini Bluffs is third in 1A, receiving two of the 12 first-place votes.

Tuscola (1A), Chicago Mt. Carmel (3A) and Normal Community (Class 4A) are No. 1 in their respective classes.

Peoria Notre Dame girls ranked No. 4

PND comes in as the fourth-ranked team in 2A. The Irish received three first-place votes as Breese Central is the top-ranked team. Deer Creek-Mackinaw is No. 4 in 2A, while Princeton, Canton and El Paso-Gridley were among those receiving votes.

In 1A, Elmwood is ranked No. 5 and Peoria Heights is No. 9. Illini Bluffs also received votes in 1A, while Galena is the top-rated team.

Bolingbrook is No. 1 in 4A.

Looking ahead

The next polls are scheduled to be released Thursday, January 4, 2024. After those ranks, the poll is set to be released weekly on Wednesdays through January, then the first two Wednesdays in February.

Feb. 14 will be the final girls poll, while Feb. 21 is the last boys ranks.
