Penny Hardaway gives David Jones injury update for Memphis basketball vs FAU

Memphis basketball star David Jones is expected to play against FAU Sunday, coach Penny Hardaway said Friday.

Jones went down early in the second half of Wednesday’s win over Charlotte with an eye injury. Hardaway said it was a scratched cornea, but it is not severe enough to keep the AAC’s leading scorer off the floor Sunday (1 p.m., ESPN).

Hardaway labeled Jones as "kinda questionable," but added, "Knowing him, I think he's going to play."

The Tigers (19-8, 8-6 AAC) were already shorthanded against the 49ers with reserves Jayhlon Young (ankle), Jayden Hardaway (concussion) and Jordan Brown (back) sidelined with injuries. But Hardaway said Friday that Jayden Hardaway and Brown will "probably" be available. He was not as sure about Young’s status versus the Owls (21-6, 11-3).

Jones' 21.6 points per game are tops in the conference. He is also sixth in the league with 7.6 rebounds per game and third in steals per game (2.1).

FAU is tied for second place in the AAC standings with Charlotte. South Florida is in first place.

Memphis is in sixth place thanks to a major skid that saw the Tigers lose six times during a nine-game stretch. Two of those losses came against Rice and Tulane (both 4-9 in AAC). The Tigers also fell to South Florida in a 1-point game at home after leading by as many as 20 points in the second half.
