Penn State snapshot profile: Chop Robinson

Going into the 2022 football season, Nittany Lions Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Penn State roster.

Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for James Franklin this season.

One of the strengths of Penn State in 2022 could end up being the defensive line. Even with the departures of a pair of NFL draft picks at defensive end, Penn State’s defensive line provides reasons for optimism this fall. Among the reasons is a new addition by way of the transfer portal with Chop Robinson. Robinson transferred to Penn State after one season at Maryland, and he could be a name to watch in 2022.

Depth Chart Overview

Matthew OHaren-USA TODAY Sports

The addition of Chop Robinson through the transfer portal was designed to help bolster the defensive line depth this season. Head coach [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] has confirmed the plan is to use Robinson as a defensive end, and he stands a good chance to lock down a starting role as early as this fall for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State lost two defensive ends to the NFL draft and [autotag]Zuriah Fisher[/autotag] suffered a season-ending injury in the spring, so the arrival of Robinson helps plug the hole in a big way. Having previously recruited him out of high school, Franklin is well aware of what Robinson potentially brings to the table.

With [autotag]PJ Mustipher[/autotag] and [autotag]Coziah Izzard[/autotag] the likely duo in the middle of the line and [autotag]Nick Tarburton[/autotag] starting on one end of the line, Robinson could fill out the starting lineup if he transitions well into the mix this summer. [autotag]Adisa Isaac[/autotag] (pictured above, No. 20) is likely the biggest threat to standing in the way of Robinson in 2022, but Robinson could be a fixture on the edge in 2023 if he has to wait for his time.
