Penn State QB Sean Clifford drafted by Green Bay Packers Round 5

The Green Bay Packers made a monster move at the quarterback position prior to the NFL draft, and in the fifth round the franchise picked up a quarterback when it selected Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford.

Clifford was drafted by the Packers with the 149th overall pick with a fifth-round selection on Saturday afternoon. He won’t be asked to be a franchise quarterback as the Packers already have their successor to Aaron Rodgers in line with Jordan Love, but Clifford could be a serviceable backup option for the Packers.

Clifford leaves Penn State as the school’s all-time leader in passing yards with 10,661 career passing yards and 86 touchdown passes. Clifford reset the Penn State school record book for both stats this past season, his sixth season with the program, to pass Trace McSorley.

Clifford certainly had his ups and downs throughout his college career, but he ended his time at Penn State as the offensive MVP in a Rose Bowl victory over Utah. Ironically, Clifford is drafted in the same draft as Will Levis, who went earlier in the draft and transferred from Penn State largely because he could not beat out Clifford for the starting job with the Nittany Lions.

Clifford was a four-star member of Penn State’s Class of 2017, a recruiting class that also included Lamont Wade, Yetur Gross-Matos, Ellis Brooks, Tariq Castro-Fields, and KJ Hamler.
