Penn claims NIC girls track team title; pair of South Bend runners break records

Mary Eubank and Julia Economou were both double event winners to lead Penn to a 151-106.5 victory over Adams in the high school girls track Northern Indiana Conference meet Tuesday night at Elkhart's Rice Field.

Distance runner Eubank won the 1,600 meter race (5:07.87) and the 3,200 (11:07.29) for the Kingsmen while Economou claimed the 800 (2:23.25) and anchored the winning 4x400 relay team that won in 4:12.04.

Washington freshman Adriana Swanson swept the hurdle events, smashing the meet record time in the 100 hurdles with a 14.80 clocking. The previous record of 15.11 has been held by Adams' Dezha Moore since 2014. Swanson won the 300 hurdles in 46.43.

Adams senior sprinter Angel Thomas also broke a meet record in the 100 with a time of 11.97, crushing the 12.08 mark held since 2007 by Washington's Shearice White. Thomas won the 200 in 25.65.

Washington also had a winner in the 400 with Terryah Leonard clocking 59.25.

Penn won two of the relay events as Macey Gableman, Janine Mbianda and Ella Bailey joined Economou for the 4x400 (4:12.04) victory and the team of Aubrey Morgan, Kaylie Hanyzewski, Arianna Balinnang and Morgan Collins won the 4x800 (9:56.57) for the Kingsmen. Jill Pletcher won the pole vault (10-6) for Penn.

Elkhart won the 4x100 relay in 51.15. Shaniyah Hughes was a double-event winner for the Lions, claiming the long jump with an 18.3.5 leap and high jump (5-4). Ava Decker also won for Elkhart with a 126-1.75 heave in the discus.

The shot put went to Adams' Samara Rouser (35-6).
