Penfield Patriots rush back at Rush-Henrietta: Section V's top games from Saturday

Penfield lost its lead in the season opener, but was powered by AJ Theodorakakos and Adam Schembri during a 26-7 come-from-behind win at Rush-Henrietta to improve to 1-1 on the season Saturday afternoon.

Coach Anthony Bianchi's Patriots trailed 7-0 before scoring the game's final 26 points. Theodorakakos dove into a pylon for his first touchdown to pull within one. Schembri then scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in the second half, and Theodorakakos' 46-yard score in the fourth closed the door on coach Joe Montesano's Royal Comets (0-2) in a Class AA clash that featured light rain throughout the contest.

Theodorakakos, a sophomore, and Schembri, a senior, shared quarterback duties, did most of their damage behind a stout offensive line led by the likes of Joseph Alello, Mason Schembri and Michael Vaccarella. The front line led a rushing game that almost gained 300 yards.

Defensively, Aaron Hardaway caught a fourth quarter interception. Hardaway and Gavin Earl registered key sacks and led a unit that stopped a few red zone trips as Comets' like Jackson Koppers — who scored their lone touchdown — Justin Medina and Nasir Patton threatened to score.

"We came out flat. That's two weeks in a row," Bianchi said. "We have to come back and see what was going on, missing sacks, missing tackles and assignments. Coach Montesano is a great coach. He schemed up very well, but our players came ready to play after that drive, and I'm excited and happy for them."

Dansville/Wayland-Cohocton 3, Vertus 0

Reid Martin kicked through a 38-yard field goal attempt with 16 seconds remaining at Rochester Community Sports Complex to give Dansville/Wayland-Cohocton a win in the team's season-opener.

This was a matchup in Section V Class B, where Dansville/Wayland-Cohocton finished with a 3-6 record last season. Vertus lost all seven of its games in 2022, the charter school's first season at the varsity level, and won its season-opener last week.
