Pelicans scrub Anthony Davis from team's intro video and Twitter banner following trade request

It appears we have reached the “deleting photos of each other” stage of the breakup currently taking place between Anthony Davis and the New Orleans Pelicans.

As the Pelicans took the floor at home against the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday, the team’s intro video was very conspicuously missing Davis in a picture of the entire team shown at the end, per Andrew Lopez of The Times-Picayune.

It didn’t take long for the Pelicans’ new intro video to hit the internet. As you can see from the 1-minute mark, Davis is nowhere to be found in the video’s final image. Nor does he appear to be featured in any of the preceding highlights.

The Pelican’s conspicuously Anthony Davis-less video

So, that’s going to raise some eyebrows as the Pelicans possibly prepare to trade away the team’s all-time leading scorer in the prime of his career, barring some explanation from the team on why it made such a meaningful edit to something as simple as an intro video. Maybe the franchise wanted to feature the players that were actually playing for the team on Wednesday since Davis has been out with a finger injury. Who knows.

Then again, this isn’t the only piece of media the Pelicans have removed Davis from.

Pelicans remove Anthony Davis from Twitter banner too

It was noted Tuesday that the Pelicans had removed Davis from their Twitter banner photo. He was replaced with Jrue Holiday, the closest thing the Pelicans would have to a star in a post-Davis world.

It’s not likely that any of this was done at the behest of a front office preparing to distance itself from Davis. However, it is still a very good indication that the Pelicans organization is beginning to accept the reality that it might not see Davis play another game for the team. Head coach Alvin Gentry couldn’t even say for sure Davis would wear a Pelicans uniform again.

Where Anthony Davis and the Pelicans currently stand

While New Orleans has maintained it is in no rush to trade Davis and reportedly isn’t even picking up the phone for trade requests, Davis has pushed for a trade enough that the NBA fined him $50,000 for violating the collective bargaining agreement. That’s a situation teams would probably want to defuse sooner rather than later.

And yet, it might be in the Pelicans’ best interest to try and stick it out until the offseason with their superstar. That’s when the asset-rich Boston Celtics, who could have the strongest possible offer for Davis, can join the fray due to a quirk in the CBA. There are plenty of other possible destinations for Davis, most notably the Los Angeles Lakers, but the Pelicans’ top priority is getting as much value as they can.
